Re: What was the first airplane you flew in?
I don't really remember, but from family history, it would probably have been an AirCanada DC-8, Manchester to Montreal ( fuel stop in Reykjavik?) in late summer, 1969.
First one that I flew was a discovery flight at CZBB in the summer of 1991 in a C150.

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

G'day
"Mine was 1966, aged 8, also an Air Canada Vickers Viscount, but YUL - YYR. Loved every minute of it, and loved it all over again on the return flight a year later. "
Are you sure it was not a Vickers Vanguard?
Cheers...Chris

Canadian Airlines DC-10 from Vancouver to Maui. I was 5 years old and remember sitting at the gate looking at this massive, beautiful blue, white and red jet and being completely awestruck by it. I got to visit the cockpit and the flight crew gave me a set of wings, a picture of the airplane a a few stickers. I was a very quiet and polite child and according to my parents my Dad left me up front and the flight crew let me stay with them for well over an hour and a half. I guess they really liked my enthusiasm.
The flight attendant finally brought me back to my seat. I've been in love with all things aviation ever since. The only part of subsequent vacations I really cared about was flying to and from our destinations! Still to this day I often have to pinch myself when I realize I now walk through the same terminal building wearing a pilots uniform. We are all truly fortunate to be doing what we love every day!

Hey Chris - not 100% positive as it was a long time ago, but family legend has it as a Viscount, not a Vanguard. Why do you ask?Moose47 wrote:Are you sure it was not a Vickers Vanguard?
Re: What was the first airplane you flew in?
7 April, 1961. Canadian Air Force North Star. Trenton Ontario to Germany. I was 7. We turned back about 3 or 4 hours into the flight. The U.S.A. had just invaded Cuba (Bay of Pigs). We stayed in Trenton for about a week wondering if WW3 was about to start. It did't, so my second flight to Germany was uneventful. My career got off the ground in 1971 because I enjoyed those flights so much. Last flight will be in a CL64 sometime next year.

Wardair 747, Vancouver to London (Gatwick), 1978.
Best flight I ever took. Every one since has been inferior. Should have quit while I was ahead.

BN2a. From Halifax to Sable Island. My friend's dad ran the weather station out there and he was able to bring me over for March break. Ended up flying one for a living 20 years later.

I was about 4 or 5 years old when a local guy took me for a little spin around the lake that I grew up on. It was a beautifully restored cub.

Just missed you by 6 or 7 months. Left Centralia (PMQ Brat) for RCAF Station Saskatoon in August 1957. You should have been there when they still had 159 Harvards, 29 Expediters and 6 Dakotas. Now that was a flightline (-:

Rumour has it I was conceived in one! However.. the first I remember was YVR-YYZ on an AC 727 in 1986. The first real experience was in one of Tindi's 185's at age 5.. I'm pretty sure I have some photos of that.

Re: What was the first airplane you flew in?
Mine first flight was on Air Canada B747 from Toronto to Tampa, FL.
Was supposed to have been an L1011 but it was swapped out.
This was when I was 5 year old back in 1989.
It was that return flight (also a B747) from Tampa to Toronto at night that really got me hooked.
I still remember going to the flight deck and going wow look at all the lights.
The First Officer turned up the brightness and it was like a Christmas Tree.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

First plane I was on was a Vickers Viscount in 1963 from CYQR to LHR. I think we were on a smaller plane to CYWG.

Re: What was the first airplane you flew in?
Like North Shore, I don't remember either. It would have been sometime mid-70's, Air Canada, maybe a DC-8 or L-1011. My mom told me that she pinned the boarding pass on the back of my shirt and just let me go off to explore the airplane by myself. I don't remember that part, but I do remember that there was a stop in London, looking out of an open door and seeing lots of snow and slush.
The most memorable flights for me though, at a young age, was a Western Airlines DC-10 flight from Honolulu which was practically empty, and a few Wardair flights which decided my direction into aviation.

Re: What was the first airplane you flew in?
My first flight was on an Air Canada DC-9 from YYZ-YOW when I was 3 months old in 1996. The first flight I actually remember was another Air Canada DC-9 from YOW-YQB (No idea how old I was, but I remember it). My first flight up front was with the cadets on a 172 in 2010 on a 3 hour fam flight from YBW-High River-Okotoks-YBW. My first actual flight lesson will be in January or Feruary on a Zlin 242 at Sault College
