Looking for good magazines for the beginning pilot (PPL)

Post by DroidDr »

Hi,

I started my PPL about a month ago, and I want suggestions on reading material (aside from the basics such as from the ground up)

Can you suggest good magazines geared towards the student pilot or the private pilot?
Can you suggest other books?

The point here is to gain a more complete knowledge base.

Thanks and best wishes!

If you are learning in a Cessna, I recommend a book titled "Cessna, Wings for the World" by Thompson. it'll explain the development and testing of all the single Cessnas, and why they are the way they are. I lot of wisdom about flying in there too.

That, of course, is one of many excellent books, which I hope will also be mentioned, like "Stick and Rudder".

Not too many.

Like lots of websites out there... there are a lot of 'experts with opinions' articles out there that range from the amusingly useless to the downright dangerous. AOPA Pilot used to be pretty good... I always liked the articles by Richard Collins who also wrote for Flying for many years... but trying to find good authors who don't let their opinions and feelings show through to the detriment of basic safe aviating is a difficult task even for more seasoned pilots.

Take anything you read in magazines or online about flying with a grain of salt.... including this post.

Thanks,

It has been a few times I saw Flight training as a good suggestion. Same for stick and rudder.
I think I will get both.

What about a membership to COPA?

I think as a student pilot you get a free membership to COPA.

The COPA paper will be your most general, closest-to-home publication. AOPA's Pilot, and EAA's Sport Aviation are both very good.

There are a couple of UK magazines that are excellent... I think PILOT is one of them. Look for it at your local magazine shop that has a good selection of overseas mags. It's not cheap though.

The best part of Sport Aviation is Mike Busch's articles, definitely required reading for any owner/pilot. His articles are available here if you don't want to subscribe to the magazine.

Personally I also like reading Budd Davisson's Grassroots column in Plane and Pilot but the rest of that mag usually puts my teeth on edge, so you can also read his stuff on his website. On the website the "pireps" are good info if you're going to try new airplanes out.

The other author I read is Martha Lunken who appears in Flying magazine, which of course can be read online as well. I tend to agree with both of the above author's assessments on the necessity for some good ol' stick and rudder training.

Ok,

Added some bookmarks based on Shiny Side Up's suggestions.

I think I will try COPA's publication and also AOPA and take it from there. I may add flying as well if the yearly digital cost is low.

Take some of the material you may read in the COPA publication with a questioning "eye", particularily if it comes from the CEO or the Board!

Really upset that no one has mentioned the piloting usuals like Big Uns, Playboy, Playgirl or Hustler.

New member looking to start training and the tips here are good. Why the caution about the COPA paper?

Accidents, accidents -- study them (aftermath in flying Mag, or via the TC safety letter)

I have, and still do, learn a lot from reading these......

There's a LONG thread here on AvCan that would explain it. Suffice it to say, the president and CEO are more apt to protect their own *sses than they are to protect the long-term best interests of COPA.

By getting into aviation you're already fucking yourself. Might as well have something to look at when you're doing it.

Bazinga! Come on, aviation isn't that bad. Sure beats standing on the back of a garbage truck with warm garbage juice running down your arm.

Except on pay day the garbage collector* can afford to buy groceries, a magazine and take a hot shower ay home, indoors.

*Had to be gender neutral there even if I have never seen one that was not male.
