I guess the problem with that report is that $ numbers on a page do not mean much. The cost in terms of human suffering, destruction of the environment and lingering effects is beyond calculation. Undoubtedly, the U.S. could roll over Canada in pretty short order. The problem is, given the number of lunatics running D.C., that is a distinct possibility. Fact is, they pretty well do anything they want with us, most of our oil goes straight south so when you own a country economically, sovereignty really becomes a moot point and more of a warm fuzzy ruse than anything. The need for military takeover of us by the U.S. is minimal, unless of course the states becomes a military dictatorship (high liklihood), we will fall under the boot of that as well. I feel that is the greatest shadow hanging over us now, and I do not believe most people realize it.

Swede ---- Two points:

1) I was once a member of the US Army and funnily enough a study had been done on that very invasion of Canada that you mention. It ended up being a complete failure in every aspect. They had a problem with a massive "Fifth Column" that they couldn't handle. That "Fifth Column" permeated every facet of American society, government and military. Many had high profile positions and some of those high profile positions were within the confines of the military, White House and government. It was determined that 10,000+ Canadian nationals in the military would have to be arrested, including the 2 i/c of their largest Army Division. Next they would have to find a new pilot for Air Force One because the captain for that a/c would also have to be arrested. At that time, they would also have had to arrest the National Security adviser and two of the President's speech writers. So don't loose any sleep waiting for the impending invasion. Canada got exactly the same problem also because 14,000,000 North Americans are citizens of BOTH countries and that includes 650 Members of the RCMP, including their Commissioner at one time.

2) The oil that the Americans receive from us is by a very long and prior agreement. If you wish to believe that the Americans control the oil supply in Canada, then you better check your facts. You might want to start at The Oilmen's Club in Calgary first though. Try a Friday afternoon when there will be lots present and "well-oiled" enough to say things they might not say in a more sober moment. The first question YOU'LL be asked is "Just where in the hell are you getting this B.S. from?". I just took time-off from flying the oil and gas patch in AB and how very wrong you are. Don't be insulted by that though because you have a multitude of Canadians with you who believe exactly the same and they cannot be made to believe differently.

Yes. The USA hates us because we are Westerners...errr...sorry...wrong tribe.

Fundamentalist Islam hates us. Even if you love them...they hate you. Deal with it and prepare for the Third Crusade.

LH - Interesting indeed - things between us and the states are very intertwined, so to speak. My concern is that most Canucks do not realize how intimately connected (and vulnerable) we are. That, I believe, is the major problem - more to come shortly..

Swede ----- the same can be said for many Americans also. Vulnerable? We've been vulnerable for all of our existance. Intertwined? You bet we are and one hell of a lot more than most Canadians and Americans realize. Twenty-five of the soldiers killed with Custer at the Little Big Horn were Canadian and his most trusted Officer, Major Cooke, was a Canadian and was eventually buried in his home town of Hamilton after the battle. Fifty-five of the Medals of Honor that have been awarded have been to Canadians and the last one to be awarded was during the Vietnam War and went to one Peter Lemon......a Canadian. Ten of the Union Army General Staff and two of the Confederate Army General Staff during the Civil War were Canadians. The Gemini Space capsule was designed by Canadian engineers and the Mission Head during it's space trip was Canadian. There was no American Intelligence organization at the beginning of WW2 and one William Stephenson of Winnipeg and also the inventor of the Fax machine, was the man who set up Camp X near Whitby, Ont. to train American agents of what later became the OSS. When we needed instructors at the beginning of WW2 for the RCAF (and before the US had declared war on anybody), FDR made it secretly legal for us to recruit experienced pilots in the US as instructors. Those men, plus another 35,000, crossed the border to join the RCAF and became what was known as the "Eagle Squadrons". Five of our WW2 RCAF "Aces" were Americans wearing that RCAF uniform and some stayed on to live here when the war was finished. Max Sennett, Mary Pickford, Louis B. Mayer and Max Warner of Warner Bros Studios were all 100 % Canadian and are basically the ones that Americans can thank for a place called Hollywood and a movie industry to go with. Since we all love to bash Georgie Bush and his stupid speeches, then we can thank one David Frum for a whole host of those speeches because he wrote a whole mess of them. David Frum is the son of Barbara Frum, late of the CBC and now has a column in the Toronto Globe and Mail or the National Post. So we even had a hand in some of George's stupid speeches. Lastly, their biggest Army Division (III Corps) at 16,500 personnel, has a General who is 2nd in Command and that Division presently is stationed in Northern Iraq.

Yeah, you bet were "intertwined" alright. If they were coming over the border they would have been here a long time ago, so don't anybody get their panties in a knot over that. It's not a question of when they will invade, but a question of who has already invaded who. When they put on their lights to read the ledger on what the score is on all that, they might want to realize that 5 of their biggest power-generating dams are owned and operated by a Canadian conglomerate named BRASCAN and that same company owns half the real estate of downtown Denver, CO and the majority of their skyscrapers in that locale. That's all just for starters because I haven't even begun to "scratch the surface"

The cost of war is very low, the cost of trying to please the liberal tree huggers is the expensive part..

They could have nuked the ME but they knew the bleeding hearts would be complaining all over the world, so to save a few terrorist lives they're spending trillions and losing life..

Sad day indeed...

cyyz -----I'll disagree. The "cost" of war can't be measured in dollars and the main losses from war can't be replaced with dollars either. "Nuking" anyone is not an option as far as I'm concerned. It would have been best for all concerned if the US would have stayed home and let those who have problems sort those problems out by themselves. Half the members of the UN haven't paid their dues for over 10 years, but Canada and the US have done so. The Un also hasn't paid Canada to date for "peacekeeping duties" worldwide for the last 10 years + and we all know who's financing those costs. One hundred and sixty Canadian soldiers have also given their lives in defense of other peoples and that all doesn't mean much unless you are the close relative of one of those soldiers. It's now time to stop until other countries pay-up their dues to the UN and until the UN picks-up part or all of the hundreds of millions that the Canadian taxpayer has forked-out to "police" the rest of the world. Let's have the US and Canada stay at home and let all the rest of the "high-foreheads" sort their own problems out by themselves. They appear to have all the answers anyway.

David Frum is but one of a long list of Canadian Presidential speech writers spanning decades.

And what about the hundreds of millions of people who live in the Middle East that aren't terrorists?! You talk about nuking the region and then complain that lives are being lost now?

You sir, are an idiot.

"Nuking" the Middle East is a lot more complicated than at first glance. There are literally thousands of North American, European, and Asian workers in the Middle East working in a host of professions and trades. I have a ton of friends myself who are flying in the region also. So "nuking" the Middle East would get extremely ugly in the aftermath with the death count for all those from friendly foreign countries and those from North American soil.

Not to mention mass murder on a scale that would make Hitler look like a novice. A few thousand Western casualties look pretty insignificant when talking about nuking an entire region that is home to over a quarter billion people.

"When in doubt....follow the money". Part of what you state would be true, BUT many of those friendly foreign powers have the ability to cause the US a world of grief on many fronts without raising a rifle or firing any kind of shot. The US does not function in vacuum and if all the rest of the world turned on her financially, things would get very ugly at home with "Joe American". He couldn't even start his car in the AM to go to work and the long-haul trucks would slowly grind to a halt. People should take a look at what they are walking, driving and flying in and then they understand how "tied-together" we are globally. This ain't 1939 and things have changed a tad since then in that regard.
