About half of WestJet's (TSX:WJA) mainline fleet will get the new seats next year with the rest in 2016. It is also looking at adding new seats on the Q400 turboprops flown by its Encore regional subsidiary.
If it does add the extra seats, the change will be made on all Boeing 737s but not on planes flying to vacation destinations as Air Canada (TSX:AC.B) has done with its low-cost Rouge subsidiary, Saretsky added.
The airline currently flies three types of Boeing 737s with between 119 and 174 seats. Saretsky wouldn't rule out eventually following Ryanair's lead, which plans to fly planes with up to 200 seats.

If they do this I hope they also charge people based on their weight so I can at least save a bit of money when I get crammed in between two XL pax and have no arm rests since they become roll rests.

Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
That's a relief. I was having a hard time reaching all the forward to that seatback pouch.
Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
Is it April 1st already??
Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
I think this quote doesn't make sense. I think they mean to say: the change will be made on all 737s not only on planes flying to vacation destiantions as Air Canada has done with Rouge. Calgary Herald turns it into a misquote and gets a dig on Air Canada. Quality reporting. If it does add the extra seats, the change will be made on all Boeing 737s but not on planes flying to vacation destinations as Air Canada (TSX:AC.B) has done with its low-cost Rouge subsidiary, Saretsky added

WestJet Airlines is considering adding another row of seats on its planes to drive higher revenues after it puts in a new entertainment system over the next two years.
Chief executive Gregg Saretsky said Tuesday that passengers won't notice any change in legroom after it installs new slim-line seats equipped with the Wi-Fi system, which give an extra inch of legroom.

Perhaps they meant like they said and the changes will be on all 737s but not on planes flying to vacation destinations.altiplano wrote:I think this quote doesn't make sense. Yeah, and that's why it doesn't make sense...
I think we all understand that they are doing the entire fleet. Moving away from a standardised configuration for just the vacation market doesn't make sense either.all

are you getting hung up on it because he says All 737s? the sentence continues to say "on all 737s but".
But; except; apart from; other than.
I don't read it the same as you. I read it as not reconfiguring the vacation market and changing all the rest.

Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
I actually read it as ALL 737's but not the 767's.
Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
Ok Brad, I guess we'll see.
Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
Re: not the 767s... I'd think that they'll introduce them with a similar cabin as the new 737 config. Brand consistency and all...
Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
Encore's slimline seats are torture. I would not look forward to seeing those on mainline's planes.

Ya, who knows what he meant to say. Doesn't sound enjoyable either way.

Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
I asked myself the other day, why do people fly on Westjet?
> As expensive as AC on most of the same routes
> Entertainment system...basic cable.
> Food....I thought AC was expensive.
> I have never sat so uncomfortably next to someone else ever and I am pretty skinny. We were literally shoulder to shoulder. Knees were smashed.
How in the hell are they going to get another row of seats in there? Even small people complain about the seating on WS.
I'd take boredom over comfort anyday - but really, they can't afford to slowly update their fleet as they add new planes without tuna canning everyone into the back?
Granted I haven't flown on Rouge, don't ever plan on it, but WS isn't winning any points in my book. Private charter anyone?

Just another reason to take our future trips by J-3, 12 foot aluminum boat or travel trailer.
Because they already have enough air-rage on those flights....but not on planes flying to vacation destinations...

Skinny seats, same pitch.
I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming in terror like his passengers...
Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
Are they same seats as those on the Q400s? You know the rock hard ones with zero cushioning?

Further proof that the MBAs running the airlines don't give a crap about their customers. All they see is bigger numbers on a spread sheet.

Let me see: these would be the same customers who cheerfully change carriers to save $5 on the airfare? That's why it's called a market economy, not a loyalty economy.rxl wrote:Further proof that the MBAs running the airlines don't give a crap about their customers. It's a dog eat dog world out there: the trick (with apologies to Norm Peterson) is to make sure you're not the one wearing Milk Bone underwear.

Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
I've flown Rouge, and the difference was definitely noticeable. Very tight knee-wise (pitch). Shoulders seemed the same as WJ. Not sure what the slimmer seats will mean.
Money, wish I had it...
Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
Last I checked and airline is a business, not a feel good charity. If people will pay more money to fly on an airline with more comfortable seats, then I'm sure the airline would take advantage of that. But people will fly on the airline with the cheaper prices, sit in uncomfortable seats, complain about it but come back again anyways.rxl wrote:Further proof that the MBAs running the airlines don't give a crap about their customers. Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
I wonder just how low can the quality of a product can go before the customers find alternatives?
Re: WestJet looking at adding seats to their aircraft
When that happens I would hope that they would adjust their product.rxl wrote:I wonder just how low can the quality of a product can go before the customers find alternatives?
Although I agree it is unfortunate that the public finds the decreasing quality acceptable, I am glad we are not at the level of some very successful European LCCs, however perhaps we're on our way.
But frankly it keeps us pilots employed, and my seat at the nose of the airplane is plenty comfortable.
