Money
Yup, I've hit that roadblock all pilots have. The oh so annoying issue of money. I'll be 17 in December and I realllllllly want to start my PPL, only problem is, I only have $500, not much else. And my job doesn't start until August 18th, and I've calculated it, and I'll only have $4000 by next May-June time. Anyone have any inventive ways of making money? Besides the good ol' save save philosphy...which I put into practice...I don't buy anything

I think this thing they call money is a plant root of some sort. I have often heard people talking about it being the root of evil or something. I have never seen one of these plants but it must be something similiar to a turnip. Then again I think it might be related to the pot plant because it seems only dishonest people that seem to have a lot of it.
Putting money into aviation is like wiping before you poop....it just don't make sense!
Depending on where you are, you might be able to get yourself a "make a pile of money in a short period of time" jobs (i.e Oilpatch). Live like a monk, stash all your money, and after a year or two, you'll have enough money to get your CPL.

Please don't tell my mother that I work in the Oilpatch...she still thinks that I'm the piano player at a whorehouse.

Take out a crap load of loans, get yourself into debt up toyour eyeballs and you can join our club.... membership's the only thing thats free
On a serious note, I got a fulltime job that could support me and took out school loans. It took me longer to get everything done working 40+ hours a week, but now that I'm finnished the majority of my trainning, I still can afford loan payments and to even hit the bars every now and then. All the $$ I make flying now just helps pay off those loans quicker.

Sometimes I think it's a shame when I get feelin' better when I'm feelin no pain.

TD Bank used to have a program with ATAC, you got a loan but didnt have to start repaying until after your were done and I belive there was a period that you could make intrest only payments aswell. Thats how I paid for my PPL, the commercial went on Visa, Mastercard, a personal LOC and a student loan for my multi rating. CIBC had a visa that gave a 10% interest rate for a 50 per year fee. Cant think of anything else right now, well nothing legal anyways. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight guys...I start dishwashing on the 18th (how fun) and figured a way to make 7 grand by next summer...if I work enough. Then I think its time to get some student loans for the CPL + Uni. Thanks again guys....if worst comes to worst, I could always deal up some of that west coast bud we're famous for
TD doesn't give loans out anymore, they didn't give me any that's fo' sheezy. Someone must have tipped them on the earning potential of a freshly minted Commercial Pilot.
Try CIBC. If you go to University they can give you as much as you like. They gave me 30g's. You pay the interest every month and you don't have to pay off anything until one year after graduation. Its a sweet deal.

Heres one idea for you, how to make a few bucks to finance this passion we all call aviation. Look for any type of piece work in your local city, community etc. Any log building company, 90% of forestry jobs all require hard work, lots of sweat and a chance to learn a new skill and to see some of your province. I treeplanted for 7 years, built highways in the north for another 2, and taught kids to paddle in the summer and ski in the winter for many more. It paid for my Universtity degree, all flying licenses and ratings. I did eat Kraft dinner though for many years.
Any physical job in the bush will pay 200.00 a day if your a dedicated worker. Best of luck, if you want it bad enough you will make it happen. After all said and done I still spent 2 years working the ramp before I got my first flying job. But I wouldnt trade the experiences or friends I make over the last 10 years for anything.

Try to get a job at a flight school like ramp or dispatch. They sometimes will offer a discount to employees. I had the one I worked at skim some of my paycheque to put on my flying account.
Besides, the aviation related experience is helpful and you get to scope the instructors so you you dont get stuck with an a$$.
Just my $0.02.
Good luck.

This may sound weird, but if you're serious about being a pilot, the first thing you need to develop is a non-aviation skill or trade. Learn to be a mechanic, a painter, a plumber, an electrician, a carpenter, anything non-aviation that you can work at just about anywhere.
This trade will allow you to earn money and finance your initial flight training, up to commercial and either multi-ifr or floats. Try really hard not to go into debt as you collect your ratings and hours.
And when there's yet another downturn in this very cyclic business of aviation, go back to your trade until the drought is over.
This may sound kind of nutty, but gosh it sure works well, especially if you lose your medical down the road.
There's nothing sadder than a pilot who doesn't know anything but aviation, but can't fly.

Excellent advice Hedley....
...but you forgot to mention that if they want to work as a mechanic go into heavy equipment..that pays more.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

From my experience you cannot get government student loans for pilot training and the line of credits from the bank dont give any relief - you have to pay them back in full. I have a line of credit and the interest only was good but now I have to pay back the principle as well and have some credit card debt as well. I'm just paying my bills and getting by now but my gf is pressuring me to declare bankruptcy so I can start over and by her a house etc! haha really shes the one thats going to buy the house just because I cant afford it.
The trades idea is a good one. I finally got a good paying job building homes and am learning special log building techniques. I'm hoping that I'll be able to save up or get another loan to finish my commercial while making some decent money.

Go to university, become an engineer and go work for an oil company in Alberta. Earn more money than you could ever dream of in aviation, and buy yourself an airplane in 5 years, after your house is already paid for. Don't listen to anyone who tells you to get a bunch of loans. I fly with guys that are still trying to pay off student loans (10 years later). Stay out of debt, it feels great.
Cheers

Bottom line for someone wanting to become a commercial pilot. Do not go into debt in the process. Get an actual job/trade first and get into debt for that if you have to, then if you still have delusions of grandeur about aviation after trade school or university, you will have something to fall back on when you get sick of it.

Step one: Dress up nicely
Step two: Go to the local BMW dealership
Step three: Ask about that 3 series close to the lot exit
Step four: Ask for keys, do not test drive but DO study the key type and attached ring, look at car pretend to be interested in buying
Step five: Leave dealership, go get a blank key that matches one you just saw, get it cut (any pattern), get matching ring or whatever it was mounted on
Step six: Friday just before closing, go back to dealership with your made up key and ring
Step seven: Ask to see the same car again, bring classy girlfriend or clean cut boyfriend to "show" car to
Step eight: After "viewing" the car with your loved one, swap key set, give dealer your dud set, thank them for allowing viewing, then leave
Step nine: Same night, go back to the lot, ensure no one tried to move the car with a spare key, scope the lot a bit before proceeding with pickup, when all is clear simply drive it away
Step ten is multiple choice
you can either
A: strore car in storage facility, dismantle it and sell parts on ebay (you can get about 10-15k)
B: Re-identify it, sell it privately (a lot harder to do but youll get 20-25k)
C: Find an "as-is" buyer you can trust and make about 10k
just an idea....good luck!
