Cat, big choppers can move a lot of water under the right conditions but what usually handicaps them for initial attack is their lack of ability to go long distances, speed and time to get there and their ability to stay any amount of time on site. They are better utilized in a sustained operation when they have time to get support equipment, fuel etc. closer to the fire.

mother nature starts them, and mother nature puts most of the big ones out,the bombers may slow them down.Good ground crews are a must.
Re: Canadair CL415 and the AT802
The secret is to use the bombers and crews effectively to make sure the little ones never get to be big ones which eliminates having to rely on mother nature.

What's the difference between an 415 pilot and an 802 pilot?
The winning stops the moment you go 'fuel lever off' with the 802 pilots.
Cheers

Winning?
If we can put oil in the engine while we're flying then we have absolutely no problem at all.

Re: Canadair CL415 and the AT802
I'm trying to find some operating specs on the CL-215T. I can find 215, and I can find 415, but not for the 215T. If they do not exist, which is closer? 215 or 415?
I'm trying to compare:
Cruise Speed
Attack Speed
Maximum retardant/water load capacity
Fuel Capacity
Range (attack mode)
Endurance (attack mode)
Maximum Demonstrated Crosswind at 90 degrees

I think that one of the big differences between a 215T and the 415 is that the 215T retained the 2 door drop system. I have heard that many prefer this as when dropping there is more punch to penetrate the canopy. There was a company in Abbotsford building 215T aircraft from 215 piston airframes.

About numbers of cl in canada Qc goverment as 6more 2 cl-215t and 4 cl-215 piston for a totol of 14
that means 62 cl total and 24 fb.
more important things is the cl as 4 eyes and you can have little rest during a 4 hr mission. When you do a 8 hr on a fire at the end that makes a huge difference.
The 215 t carry 100 gal less than a 415 with the same engine and have the impact of a 2 doors.
The most important thing between a 415 and fb is the speed to go back to base to put out the fire in you 're throat after killing fire.
