Ahhh, so he is still with H&L..
..We used to call him " The Rooster " when he worked at the Flying Fireman and he had a habit of climbing up on the wings of the 337 and looking at the weather from that vantage point...
..I always kind of liked Rooster, if you see him tell I said hi..

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

FSIZ?!?! Poor girl. She was my machine when I did Fire Patrol in the 90s. Sweet little bird she was, never a blip in 400 hours, I DO hope the green shag carpet is okay
.
For you guys who think H&L takes advantage of their pilots, you are talking out of your a$$. I made 20k in 4 months. Do the math. I had 1100 hours when I started. Show me another job that an 1100 hour pilot can get to make that kind of dough. Yeah, we worked lots but we never turned a prop before 11am, and really, when you are trying to build (multi) time, isn't that what you want? I don't think anyone takes the job to spend a leisurely summer in Dryden or Chapleau or Geraldton. Give your head a shake.
You want an example of working conditions?
I had an interview in YYZ for a job towards the end of the summer. I called to ask for the time off, Sr actually said, "Your sub is bringing his own plane up, you wanna take yours down to T.O. for the interview? Just top it off when you get back."
At the end of the seaon, Duane Sr. sent some bucks up to our engineer to take us out for beers. Class act he was. A loss to aviation.

I worked for H&L 2 or 3 summers back and have them to thank for the 400 multi pic I received. It allowed me to move on to a turbine job. Let me clear some things up.
1. Dryden has had cell phones and pagers for many years now. I had both in Dryden which had nothing to do with Hicks. It's called Dryden Cellular and if you have a Bell phone, you will have service in Dryden(but not Rogers).
2. We showed up rain or shine every day and would be sent home (all but 1 or 2) if raining.
3. Pay was great since I was an instructor and used to making a lot less. Mind you, I didn't make what grammer boy made(20,000 for a summer and 400 hours). I think I made about 12-13000 for 400 hours.

130 day contract x $110 /day = 14300
10/hr for 1st 100 hours = 1000
15/hr for 300ish hours = 4500
Okay, I was skinny by $200. Before YOW's cut, of course.
This was 1998. The contract may have changed. I got the turbine job in YYZ btw. I started 7 days after my contract was up in Sept. Perfect timing.
