What are the chances that pilot is a new Seneca graduate?

Re: Plane forced to land sideways
I'm waiting for soomone to shitbomb the crew for undue risk, and poor airmanship. Isn't that the norm on here?
Re: Plane forced to land sideways
Well, it won't be me. I trust that they were flying within whatever operational limitations apply, and other than that they tracked the runway centerline perfectly, and made a very nice landing. What more could one ask?poor airmanship

So a strong crosswind in "The Windy City" is news on CNN?
Re: Plane forced to land sideways
Of course! How else are they going to keep a bunch of burger munching stressed taxpayers glued in front of that TV?Chaxterium wrote:So a strong crosswind in "The Windy City" is news on CNN?
Sometimes planes even wobble a bit before they hit the ground safely then.

When you run out of shootings and other catastrophic events, head to the airport for some footage and let some 45 year old escaped brunette housewife lady tell some story about it. People love this stuff.

Just curious how much side loading those jets can handle.
I doubt my Cessna would like that much!

Re: Plane forced to land sideways
Our own Just Curious (RIP) actually landed his twin Otter across the runway in yev due to crazy crosswinds.

Re: Plane forced to land sideways
Chicago is not called the Windy City because it's breezy there, it's called the Windy City because its political candidates tend to be windier than most. Look it up!

That's my bird and my company, but not me at the controls.
Not the technique I'd use, but the crap I've thrown at her, and still here to type away, she's built pretty strong.

OMG! Finally someone else besides me understands why Chicago is known as the windy city. No one ever believes me when I explain this to them.Driving Rain wrote:Chicago is not called the Windy City because it's breezy there, it's called the Windy City because its political candidates tend to be windier than most. Sorry, didn't mean to sidetrack the OP.
Re: Plane forced to land sideways
None. It's an american based air carrier that not only requires a US Green Card and/or citizenship but also due to the FAA's new ATPL regulations, requires a minimum 1500 hours unless they have obtained a bachelor's degree (1000 hours needed) or associate's degree (1,250 hours needed) at one of the Certified Educational Institutions listed here: https://www.faa.gov/pilots/training/atp ... y_List.pdf. Seneca is not a US institution and even still, recent Seneca grads do not have 1000 hours upon graduation.Cat Driver wrote:What are the chances that pilot is a new Seneca graduate?

Re: Plane forced to land sideways
With all the runways in ORD, how can this happen? Hopefully there is a logical explanation.

OMG. A lot of CNN footage for nothing! X- wind landing at or near plane limits, that`s all. We`ve all been there.

Re: Plane forced to land sideways
The runways at ORD are only orientated three different ways. Looks like 27L in the video... perhaps it would have been more of a crosswind on the 32s? Not to mention the procedures are more likely based on the best management of air traffic rather than trying to make the pilots' jobs easy..Jim la Jungle wrote:With all the runways in ORD, how can this happen? Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?
Re: Plane forced to land sideways
ORD is a beast, but surmountable. iflyforpie hit the nail on the head, volume of traffic, despite a crosswind. There are currently 4 east/west runways and they're building a 5th.Jim la Jungle wrote:With all the runways in ORD, how can this happen? Hopefully there is a logical explanation.
Landing on 9L/27R we are garunteed to make money because the taxi to the gate is forever.
We only seem to get that runway when I'm commuting home and my flight closes in 15 minutes.
(I'm not sure I've ever landed on 9L, only departed)

Re: Plane forced to land sideways
Only one plane was forced to land "sideways"?
I guess the other 30 lined up behind him weren't forced to do such a dangerous task. Thank heavens! The news could never handle such heroics

How long is that runway he/she is landing on?

Not familiar with the big metal but why didn't he come out of the crab and drop right wing and make it a forward slip at the last moment? Seems to me nose wheel would have remain down centre line and the right wheel would touch first. Is there a steering problem at that moment?

Re: Plane forced to land sideways
Lots of jets have bank angle limits when landing due to their nacelles and long wings.... so lots of times they have to touch down with a significant crab. The main gear is built to take it.ruddersup? wrote:Not familiar with the big metal but why didn't he come out of the crab and drop right wing and make it a forward slip at the last moment?
