Re: External loads...canoes...any photos?
I never heard of flying stern first or have I ever seen it -- unless of course it was a paddler canoe -- lol -- I had never seen anyone leave ropes tied to their floats when flying -- then again when I was flying floats usually only half the passengers even had a seat and sometimes none -- they sat on their kit on top of a life jacket and usually no seat belts as well -- ah the good old days where men were men and all the dogs were nervous !!!!

That flew quite well. I think I has about 80 mph with the four passengers in the plane as well. I did keep slight flap for attitude reasons.Liquid Charlie wrote:Hey BBob -- How did it fly -- flew 2 14 ft boats on a bvr and needed flap to stay in the air --
Some where I have a picture of flying a Seadoo on the floats. That required aileron input. With that load I just rolled the seedoo float off the water first to test it out. That was on straight floats the first time.

I guess there's really no limit ?!?!

something like this?zulutime wrote:Had a friend who once picked up some hunters and they convinced him, (a low timer at the time), to strap a large portion of a moose that had been cut up to the outside of the floats. He got airborne, but barely, and after just clearing the trees at the far end of the lake he set it back down on the very next lake about 200 yards away.

We run the boats stern front on the right side just like the previous owner did. Handles great just about 10 knots slower. The boat is outside the prop wash due to the fact that the steel struts on the Norseman are used to hold the boat rack.

...and more excellent pics and history regarding FQI in Milberry's Norseman books.

Perterdillon: I love the photo of the Norseman with the boat tied on the side, but you state that you fly them with the stern forward yet the photo shows the boat bow forward. Am I confused or?
I have seen this done many times and flown other types of float planes with external loads and always flew them stern forward,

My apologies I meant bow not stern. Worse than it sounds as I spent most of my life in the marine business. We always fly they them BOW forward on the Norseman and they handle like a dream. If you didnt notice the drop in airspeed you wouldnt know it was on there. Never tried it that way on the Beaver though.
