Flight Deck Doors Strike Again?

Post by ahramin »

So far I haven't seen proof that locked flight deck doors have prevented a single hijacking event. Obviously it has a large negative impact on CRM between the front and back end crews, but it's hard to translate that into actual risk to the aircraft. Slowly though, the cases where a locked flight deck door are an integral part of a crash are growing.

On most short flights I have travelled on lately the flight deck door has been opened at least once. At the end of the day if theres someone determined to get onto the flight deck they will.

Not sure what you're talking about Meat. Maybe someone else wrote whatever you are referring to?

Crap. Sorry, I didn't read the article you posted before assuming the plane crashed first and the crew couldn't get out. Cardinal sin of forum posting I'm afraid.

Condoms don't protect every pregnancy and stop signs don't guarantee everyone stops. So...what exactly is the point of this thread?

There have been many cases of deranged individuals making an attempt at the door, but then being subdued. Since they haven't been successful, how would we know what role the FD door played?

As for the link you posted, how would you suggest suicide by airline captain be prevented?

In all the cases I have seen it was the crew and passengers that subdued the mentally ill individuals, not the door. Passengers now take a very dim view of anyone trying to gain control of an aircraft they are on.

I guess the "friendly" skies are a thing of the past. If the Cubans had put the very first hi-jacker, up against a wall, and blown his brains out on the eleven o'clock news, many, many lives would have been saved! Cockpit doors, and stunned airport security are simply in place to give the ignorant masses that warm fuzzy feeling. Sheep, mate. We're all a bunch of bloody sheep!

I'd argue to the contrary. The FO could not gain access to the cockpit, despite knowing the secret Embraer knock.

This does say a lot about the door.
However it does nothing to answer the deranged asshole behind the rams horns who put them into the dirt.

Without getting into a discussion about how the doors currently operate, how exactly do you propose protecting us from the "deranged assholes"?

If someone is determined, there is no way to stop them.

Problem is, in the increcrebly unlikely event of the suicide pilot....there is NO option for the plane load of innocents, than to join him. There should be an answer.

There sure is: A third crew member. There should never be only one guy up there, I mean at least if you're worried about such things. Even if someone just has to go relieve themselves, get a warm body in that other seat. I'm sure there will be guys lining up to be second and third officers with MPL licenses....

I always just shudder to think about those poor first officers. Would really suck to know in your last few moments you're going to die like Elvis.

Again, not going into specifics, someone else stated the obvious: Always have 2 warm bodies in the cockpit. Sounds familiar right?

I would be remiss to say us pill-popping sociopaths here in the US are excellent examples of mental health, fedex and JetBlue come to mind. However in those cases there were other people up front to stop an ensuing accident.
