Typical Behavioural Based Questions
Just curious to some frequently asked behavioural questions asked during an interview. Or any other tips
Re: Typical Behavioural Based Questions
Question: How do you feel about being under paid and overworked
Question: How will you react to being a luggage handler for 2 years before ever seeing the cockpit of a plane
Question: How will you react when we tell you, that you have to pay us money or at least be indebted to us for 2 years and accept a pay cut when we let you become an f/o.
I know give the kid a break, it's his first post. Welcome to AvCanada.
Just couldn't resist

What little I do know is either not important or I've forgotten it!

Re: Typical Behavioural Based Questions
It depends really where you are applying, there are millions of potential personal behavioral questions:SeniorYVRBase wrote:Just curious to some frequently asked behavioural questions asked during an interview. Or any other tips
1. What are your weaknesses?
2. What are your strengths?
3. Describe a conflict you had at work and how did you resolve it?
4. What would your co-workers say about you?
As far as aviation goes,
1. The famous "You smell alcohol on your captain's breath before departure what, what do you do?"
2. You are flying in IMC conditions, first day on the job. You hit minimums, captain says "Landing" what do you do? He says that is what they do here to get the job done.
3. Have you ever made a mistake flying?
4. You are on the ramp, before departure you discover you are 5lbs over weight. What are you actions? What about 100lbs?

Re: Typical Behavioural Based Questions
Couple more for you:
"Tell us about a time when you had a conflict in the cockpit with the other pilot."
"Tell us about a time when you had to use teamwork to achieve a successful outcome."
Always be ready for follow up questions as well. Once you've given an example they may ask you more questions about your example. How did that make you feel, did you learn from it, etc.

One that I had at a carrier with a very large number of aircraft and operates to 12 of our 13 provinces and territories asked me a politically correct question that no one should ever have to fail an interview for or even be put on the spot was....
While I can't remember the exact question, it was along the lines of "Give us an example of how you have interacted with a person of diversity whether at work or in your own life". It was being asked by a lady from a minority so I made sure not to roll my eyes. The interviewer wasn't satisfied with my initial answer of getting along with a copilot that was a minority person. All of a sudden remembered that my brother had married(and divorced) a Chinese girl which seemed to satisfy. Add some touchy/feely stuff to it.

One valuable resource I have always used is pilot gouges. Just Google 'aviation pilot interview gouge' or air canada pilot interview gouge or transat interview gouge. The search will turn up dozens of examples the airlines use, most will be transferable to what ever operator you're going for.
Good luck, be yourself and be confident in your experiences. Don't forget to interview them too. Come up with some well thought out questions for them to make sure they're as good for you as you are for them

It is better to be sitting on the ground wishing you were in the air than being in the air wishing you were on the ground
Re: Typical Behavioural Based Questions
Here are your answers. Make them wish they never asked you the question.
1. The famous "You smell alcohol on your captain's breath before departure what, what do you do?"
- Does that happen often at this company?
2. You are flying in IMC conditions, first day on the job. You hit minimums, captain says "Landing" what do you do? He says that is what they do here to get the job done.
- Same as above.
3. Have you ever made a mistake flying?
- Yes. I don't remember what it was. It was a long time ago.
4. You are on the ramp, before departure you discover you are 5lbs over weight. What are you actions? What about 100lbs?
- 5 lbs: Go to the washroom. 100 lbs: off load a couple bags (or the FO).
I hate stupid interview questions. It's usually a result of stupid HR folks. I'm not sure if there is any evidence that these HR type interviews actually select better candidates. The best interview I ever heard of was from a buddy of mine. The boss told the guys to take the guy out for dinner and drinks on the company. The boys were to decide if they wanted to hire the guy. In the end it comes down to "do I want to fly with this guy for the next 4 days?"

... everything was going well until the guy started talking about amyloid aggregation inhibitors and single molecule dynamic force spectroscopy.Bede wrote: The best interview I ever heard of was from a buddy of mine.
