A VivaColombia Airbus A320-200, registration HK-5051 performing flight 5Z-8023 from Bogota to Medellin (Colombia) with 160 people on board, was climbing out of Bogota's runway 13R when the right hand engine (CFM56) emitted a loud bang and streaks of flame prompting the crew to stop the climb at 13,000 feet, shut the engine down and return to Bogota for a safe landing on runway 13L about 20 minutes after departure.

An observer on the ground reported it looked like the engine ingested a bird when it emitted streaks of flame and a loud bang.

The airline confirmed a failure of the right hand engine. The flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

Not sure about jet engines, but if the fire monitoring system is anything like a turno prop It's likely the fire handle wouldnt light up if they injested a bird...

The A320 has a system exactly like the Ejet. There is an A and B loop that has inert gasses, which when heated sends a signal to the cockpit indicating a fire. There are 3 location, the Fan section, nacelle and core.

The turboprop and helicopters I've flown have the same photosensor light (system), which detects IR light, not heat.
In some cases, it's possible to trigger the fire handle because of reflected sun light and rain.

AGREED!! At 8000'+ field elevation better burn for a little while longer and get altitude than hit the cumulus granite!
