Canjet Airlines Layoff 21 Pilots Effective February 2015

Post by cellharry7 »

Managements blames poor performance of new Canjet Vacations venture. Have cancelled 40% of remaining winter schedule flights. Planning 2 aircraft deployed in Europe summer 2015, 2 aircraft based in YYZ for summer 2015. Only 4 aircraft planned operation Winter 2105/2016.

How many pilots does Canjet employ (before the 21 layoffs) ? Are they using any foreign pilots this winter ?

Apply to sunwing.ca and put a foreign pilot out of work next winter.

SW will not be able to justify to HRDC that they need TFWP/FLVC while CDN B737NG pilots are on layoff. Would be great PR for SW to pick up more CJ pilots, particularly ones that would otherwise be collecting EI.

Transat also likely to be looking for more NG pilots.

Anyone know when SW's hiring will start for next season? And are Transat still hiring?

One airlines dismay is another airline's fortune.. Hmm :rolleyes:

Pardon my lack of knowledge but can you run a successful vacation airline with just 2 aircraft(summer) and 4(winter) without running into customer satisfaction issues like delays with mechanical or wx where one or more ac is stuck somewhere.

Sunwing has 110 to 120 TFW pilots in Canada now that theoretically will not be allowed into Canada next year (ESDC announced that a lack of Type rating can no longer be used as an excuse to favor Type Rated foreigners instead of Canadians). These 120 pilots have to be replaced somehow. So either Sunwing will hire 120 Canadian pilots between now and next winter or they found another way to once again bring foreign pilots into Canada.

I hope all Canjet guys get hired quickly. Transat has hired in the past 30 days but do not know if they are hiring more.

Gilles, was this a recent ruling/policy directive?

Didn't ESDC announce this before they allowed Sunwing to bring in the 100+ foreign workers for this winter? Doesn't seem to make any difference what is and isn't allowed, they just approve all foreign pilot requests regardless.

ESDC announced this new policy on June 20th 2014, but said it would only apply to all applications received after July 1 2014. They purposely gave airlines 10 days to submit one last application under the old policy, and of course some airlines rushed in their application to take advantage of the gift........

Here it is

http://www.esdc.gc.ca/eng/jobs/foreign_ ... rict.shtml
Foreign Pilots in Canada
In recent years, concerns have been raised that some airlines are excluding Canadian pilots from seasonal jobs by requiring job applicants to already be trained on specific types of planes (type‑rating) before they are hired, which is counter to general industry standards of airlines paying for and ensuring pilots obtain their training on the specific airline’s planes after they have been hired.

The Government of Canada consulted widely on this issue, and most stakeholders agreed that seasonal variations in fleet capacity should not stop airlines from training pilots for specific aircraft. It was noted that many airlines successfully contract flight time, pilot training and other training elements, such as flight simulator time, with other airlines or with aircraft manufacturers in order to meet their training requirements. There was a consensus that there is no shortage of Canadian commercial pilots who could be trained to fly specific types of aircraft.

Based on stakeholder consultations, the following changes are being made for airlines requesting foreign pilots through the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process.

Effective July 1, 2014, airlines must:

meet the minimum advertising requirements for high-wage occupations;
specify the following criteria in their job postings:
no more than a maximum of 4,000 flight hours for a First Officer and 5,000 hours for a Captain as required experience;
possess a valid commercial pilots' licence;
require English and/or French language proficiency;
include industry standard medical testing requirements for commercial flight;
state both the legal and common names of the airline operating in Canada;
not include as an essential or asset requirement the necessity of holding a type rating for a specific type of aircraft. However, requiring applicants to have experience flying equipment that is similar in configuration and complexity to the airline’s fleet is considered acceptable;
indicate when training bonds will be applied and they must cover a minimum of two years employment;
negotiate a transition plan with ESDC documenting the airline’s future efforts and commitment to decrease the reliance on foreign pilots while increasing its complement of Canadian/permanent resident pilots. The transition plan will be reviewed by ESDC for progress and can affect the outcome of future LMIA applications; and
submit LMIA applications a minimum of three months before the first day of work to ensure Service Canada officers can thoroughly review the application. Any exception to this timeline must be requested prior to the LMIA being submitted.

My sympathies to everyone affected by this. Being out of work is never fun.

For anyone interested or just in need of a job for 2yrs(bond duration), there is a lot of hiring going on over here for pilots with 737 experience. Capts with 2000hrs PIC on 737 are being hired as direct entry B787 CAPT, and for 737 FOs, being split between 787 and 777, depending on training slots and what the company needs.

For FOs----> http://careers.qatarairways.com/qatarai ... cyID=61033

For CAPTs-----> http://careers.qatarairways.com/qatarai ... cyID=81354

All the best to everyone and I hope you all find employment soon.

It's a typo from the original email... Replace "year" by "month" and you get a decent salary for an FO spot!
