The number of years for upgrade may be a little exaggerated. I would say it depends a little more on how well the wide body project does. As well as having orders for 65 737-MAX aircraft with an option of 10 more. Movement is slow right now because the 737-MAX order included cancelling 10 737-800NG orders in replacement for more MAXs. Ongoing retirement of the 600s as well as the sale of 10 700s to Southwest has slowed movement. Starting 2018 things should start to pick up and that's only 3 years away.

Re: Encore gets one list and a new pay scale.
I heard the current wait was closer to 7-8 years. I don't know how accurate that is though.
Re: Encore gets one list and a new pay scale.
Will the Max's replace the ngs on a one to one basis? Does anyone know? Or are they going to expand the company ?
I could see the wait being 7-8 years if the Max's aren't really expanding the company.
I also believe that while the widebody is a consideration, its also a wild card. If its successful I see the wait in Encore being much less than 7-8 yrs.
When you say things will pick up, what do you mean? In what context will it pick up?

Most guys I fly with who are recent upgrades have been in the 7-8 year range right now. Don't know how long that will continue though.

Hi There,
I have no idea how long it will continue to be in order for an upgrade to occur. Lat is accurate in saying that we are currently 7-8 years.
Having said that, there are a number of variables that will definitely come into play over the next few years:
-Currently we have 40 guys over the age of 60 (I’m not sure when they will retire but I suspect it won’t be too long)
-Our average pilot age is growing and within the next few years we will hit approx. 40 guys a year hitting age 60 and continues indefinately (much like AC has a consistency of retirees)
- If and when the final document is produced by CARAC on duty and rest - it is very likely that will have an effect on staffing levels at all airlines
- The next bidding schedule will likely contain the part-time pilot program (for every 2-3 pilots that go part-time a FTE will have to replace them
- How successful will the 767 program will be? if successful - there will likely be more aircraft announced
-year end hiring will now likely be 58 for 2015 at WestJet
-if the economy tanks - scratch all that
It certainly can be a long wait for an upgrade but as all know - this industry has a lot of ups and downs. Lifestyle wise - we all work hard at WJ. We always have but the best part is in my opinion you often get what you bid for regardless of seniority for both monthly schedules and vacation. I honestly love that attribute the best.
As for Encore news:
-We are still planning 50% flow for the May WestJet 737 course - if the second WestJet May course is a “go” Encore has indicated that they will try and provide %50 for that one as well (that’s just not known yet as we are waiting for the latest bid results)
-Budgeted flow at Encore has increased in 2015 from 25% to 35% as a minimum with the intent to take more
-The WJ Encore agreement will also start to be worked on very soon as a communication went out to their pilot group last week asking for interested folks to be a part of the negotiating team along side the WJPA. The first meeting is set for March.
-7 more tails to go for this year for a total of 25 by year end.
-the next two courses for Encore are full. (March interviews are full)
-In June WJ Encore turns 2 years old!
Take care,
Dave

Re: Encore gets one list and a new pay scale.
Thanks for the info Dave.
I'm curious, what is approximate time frame for fos to be put through the command course if they already meet the matrix coming in? Word is that a lot of fos now meet the matrix and upgrades have slowed to 4+ years for any fo coming in today. Is this true or just a rumour ?
Thanks Dave

Gee, whoever has that crystal ball for the upgrades in 4 years must have it pegged!
There is soooo much changing all the time. I would dismiss that assumption for now - but I’m guessing.
I honestly don’t know with regards to command courses as I’m not close to when they run those courses. I can find out for you if you like.
As for the applicants - yes, generally a significant improvement on time and qualification since the one list was announced. I can also pull the latest average tt and qualifications of the candidates and post that later too.
Take care,
Dave
