Hello All,
I'm entering my final high school year and am interested in a career in ATS. I'll make this post short and sweet:
1. One question is about post secondary options. Is their any specific programs that Nav Canada considers an asset? Currently enrolled in all University preparatory classes. Or is it best to just apply, and see how far I go before accepting post secondary.
2. Feeds from 1st question. Would I be able to apply in January (when I turn 18), and simply state that I will be graduating the following June? I know that this does not follow the requirements (must hold a high school diploma), but I would like to get a head start into the training and interview pools so I can assess my options before accepting any post secondary offers.
3. If say, I get accepted into a training pool , either IFR or VFR, how does the bidding system work? After completion of my course, do I have a small say on which sector/tower I'm assigned to. How long does it normally take to gain enough seniority to bid out of a facility if put somewhere out of province/city, etc.
Thanks for your input everyone, if i come up with anything else I'll post.

1) My opinion, continue your life plan (go to university) but apply for Nav ASAP. You can repeat the process if you fail but you never know, you might get in right away
2) You should call the recruitment office to confirm, they'd be the only ones with the final answer.
3) You have an extremely limited say to your placement from basic training. Your class will be given a few options and your placement will be assigned at their discretion. You are welcome to seniority bid to different units or specialties 3 years post-qualification (so really 3.5 to 4.5 years after completing basic training)
If you are extremely geographically concerned, think hard whether Nav Canada is right for you. You may not even be able to bid for 4.5 years, then you have to actually win a bid--the years of service required to win a bid varies based on unit desirability. Then your current tower/specialty needs sufficient staffing to let you go, which can cause a delay.
Keep in mind if you go IFR into an ACC, many people do not relocate. They are usually hired into the ACC they'll spend the rest of their careers.
Nav is a fantastic career but I do get concerned for people who apply who are not totally open to living somewhere (possibly lousy) for a number of years first.

Re: Student to ATS Career Path Questions
Yes, relocation is no issue whatsoever. I was just wondering what my options were after I gain enough experience.
