Price of Sectionals? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!!!

Post by Taiser »

I use a Garmin Aera and iPad with ForeFlight and usually can dig up a sectional if needed from somebody but I don't really fly far enough to justify getting that many paper maps. I basically put-put around NWOntario to fishing holes in a small piper.

Anyhoo, today I had to order a boatload for our UAV kits at work. Canadian Sectionals were $16.00 a piece, the CFS about $18.00 (that was OK) and the aerodrome supplement a near WHOPPING $50.00!!!! Out of curiosity I checked out the US sectionals... $6.50 each!

There a reason, besides a flying @#$! rip-off from NavCan that our sectionals are nearly 300% more expensive??? Do we use hand made parchment to print these on in Canada??? And WTF is with the aerodrome sup price??? Jesus... :smt014

Rant off...

It's called simple economics. There's a wee bit more volume in the US to cover the production of each sectional...

Supply and demand? Canada has a larger landmass to map out, and it has far less pilots

You were probably pointing out that Canadians are shorter than Americans

So less is ok

I agree that charging people more just because they are shorter doesn't sound fair though.

Sofa king? i cant seem to find them. Maybe because I am sofa king we todd did.

And yes the maps are expensive and also full of errors.... It seems like they use google maps. On the Mtl VTA, you will find one ''town'' that is a gaz station called le coin chez brault ( Brault' corner) and another one that seems to be a mexican food place called Le petit mexique ( little Mexico ).

While we are on this topic, can anyone tell me what it takes for a so-called town to qualify to make it onto the VNCs? I've come across so many of these so-called towns that are no more than a gas station or a post office but no more than 2-3 houses. Especially true on the Prairie...

What does it take for a town to disappear, if you look at the Toronto VTA chart the town of St George, located 5 clicks North of Brantford gone although it is still on the VNC chart.

When looking for US Sectionals locally with no joy, one of my searches showed that if you are willing to use a digital copy, then they are even cheaper... Like free: https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/flight_ ... ducts/vfr/

Sorry but that probably doesn't make you feel any better about the price of Canadian charts.

Yeah I know... they have them all available for digital download which is probably why apps like "Air Navigation" and "Naviator" can be had for free... Air Nav can display Canadian Maps but I think they are out of date. Dunno how they get them though...

Air Nav Pro has WAC charts that yes, are out of date.

FltPlan Go has current Canadian VTA's and VNC's, and they're free.
