Learning to read CAP, CFS, and aircraft performance graphs?
Hi there,
Does anyone know where I can learn how to read CAP approach plates, CFS aerodrome charts, and aircraft performance graphs? What's the easiest way to learn everything about this?
Thanks

I would go to a flight school, find a flight instructor or experienced pilot tutor who can show you the proper way. It's not a free way, but at least you are taking precautions on getting misleading information.

Read through the CAP GEN (available free), and then just practice reading them. The aircraft performance graphs are pretty straightforward (assuming you're talking about light aircraft performance graphs in the POH), and usually the POH gives some examples showing exactly how to use the graphs.

Skies magazine has a great column to refresh your approach plate interpretation and knowledge base. This is by no means an all encompassing 'course' or anything, just something easy on the brain and useful for staying current.

Flying airplanes is easy, you just need to PAY ATTENTION. Finding a good job on the other hand takes experience, practice, and some serious talent.

Just guessing, but the question would indicate that perhaps you are looking to become a dispatcher? As a pilot you would learn all that information as part of your training.
Trying to learn a lot of information right from square one using the internet - whether youtube, wikis, what have you - is very difficult as you don't know what to read and when to read it. There's a lot of information and you can't discriminate between useful and confusing. If I'm right about the dispatch thing, here's your best idea yet....
If it's not a dispatch thing (but it sure sounds like it) and you are a beginning pilot, it will all come in time through your training.

Any capable IFR instructor will be able to go over those items in a couple of hours and give you the basic understanding you would need for the exam. And you would also have the basics for more additional self-study if you are so inclined.glorifieddriver wrote:I would go to a flight school, find a flight instructor or experienced pilot tutor who can show you the proper way. Being stupid around airplanes is a capital offence and nature is a hanging judge!

With regards to the CAP and CAP GEN, beware of expired copies. Over the last couple of years the format has changed, even if only slightly. Ontario was the last to make the change so being in YYZ you'd probably be most at risk for any issues caused by this.

This would be the most efficient use of your time. Yes, its going to cost you, but, YouTube and CAP GEN aren't people and cannot provide answers to your questions. Perhaps if you try to learn on your own, make a list of questions, and bring that list to a CFI at a local flight school, that could save you some money. It's only $60 bucks for an hour of an instructors time (well, at the flight school I am at anyways).
