Air Canada Accident in YHZ
150221 NOTAMN CYHZ HALIFAX/STANFIELD INTL
CYHZ RWY 05/23 CLSD
1503290349 TIL 1503290900
Aircraft disabled on runway. Heavy damage to nose and port wing of an AC A320 apparently. Landing 05 and apparently the power at the airport failed. Aircraft disabled near taxiway bravo, which is very very short for landing on 05.
All second hand info at this point, waiting for more official words from media, AC, or TC.

Re: Air Canada Accident in YHZ
Been sitting at our gate here in YHZ waiting for things to improve. Strong crosswind and poor CRFI. Everyone seems to be ok after evacuation. Last group of people still waiting to get picked up off the button of 05. There was a power failure right as they were on short final.

Re: Air Canada Accident in YHZ
Hope everyone is indeed ok.
Did the power failure happen before the crash, or did the a/c damage something? The wording of the early reports is unclear on that. If it happened before the crash...how is that possible? I was under the impression that runway lighting and approach navaids were backed up by a generator that was running anytime the airport was IMC.

Re: Air Canada Accident in YHZ
Well I doubt that the aircraft damaged power lines to the airport, those tend to be kept away from runway approaches for this very reason.I_Heart_Seaplanes wrote:Hope everyone is indeed ok.

As to the generator, YHZ does have backup power. But generators do fail, a lot. I don't want to make guesses right now as to why all the power failed.
I am hoping everyone onboard the flight is safe, and injuries are minor or non-existant. Hopefully the CBC or AC will release a statement to that effect soon.
Re: Air Canada Accident in YHZ
AC's twitter eludes to it being an overrun. The ex at YHZ isn't anything nice thats for sure...

MKs 742 crash 10 years ago took out power to the airport, its off the end of 23.boxcut wrote:Well I doubt that the aircraft damaged power lines to the airport, those tend to be kept away from runway approaches for this very reason.

Confirms AC624, YYZ-YHZ exited runway upon landing at Halifax. All passengers have deplaned, going to terminal. More updates to come.
Exited the runway doesn't mean overrun. Good to know that all passengers got off the aircraft.
Here is the end of runway 5, so there are powerlines there, but if they clipped them, that would be some serious damage since they'd hit that hill and all the lights onthe approach for sure.

Re: Air Canada Accident in YHZ
I wonder if it caused the outage, or if the outage caused the crash, as in the outage was at the worst possible time around DH.
True, exited doesn't mean an overrun, but it also doesn't mean it wasn't an overrun. CRFI was pretty shitty.

Re: Air Canada Accident in YHZ
I'd say a power outage would likely have to be in the flair to cause this, not at DH. If the lights go out around DH they are going missed. This has actually happened to me and there is plenty of time to react, even lower than DH. I highly doubt the power went out before the crash.
Re: Air Canada Accident in YHZ
There is nattering online about power lines along Old Guysborough Road having been knocked down by the aircraft on approach. I had a look on google street view. The lines are not buried in the vicinity of the approach paths, but don't appear to be particularly high or close to the ends of the runways either.
Google street view of wires and 05 approach lights.

I know perspectives and photos can be deceiving, but it certainly looks like if one caught those wires on approach, the approach lights are going to be way too close for comfort a second later as well.

Re: Air Canada Accident in YHZ
I am very relieved to hear no one was killed. Great quote from the CBC article:
Again I am relieved everyone is alive. Also, I've been at the Halifax airport all night, been interesting.
I believe this is virtually the definition of CFIT. Not the accident itself, just the quote "because it was under control as it came in".Spurway said the incident was not a crash because it is believed the plane was under control as it came in. He said there's no indication what caused the hard landing and he did not know the condition of the plane.
Again I am relieved everyone is alive. Also, I've been at the Halifax airport all night, been interesting.
Re: Air Canada Accident in YHZ
Glad everyone got out alive!
Too early to say, but with that weather I wonder if guys did an autoland? If the power failed around the same time and generators didn't kick in, maybe the guys lost the "flare" and "rollout" capability in final stages of landing and the plane hit hard the runway (as some media reported) .....??
As I said glad everyone got out..but it sure will be bad press for Airbus this week.

Re: Air Canada Accident in YHZ
There is no ILS on 05 for an autoland. I believe the power outage was due to the aircraft clipping something. We heard their landing clearance, then the power went out, and a few seconds later ATC got fire trucks rolling. There was no communication from the aircraft. The location they were instructed to go to was taxiway B on 05. Incidentally, that's at about the 1000ft mark.
Re: Air Canada Accident in YHZ
Thanks CFM, didn't know what runway was in use.
