Courtenay airpark crash

Post by dave_091 »

Went for my walk around the airpark today and I was told there was a crash.
Found this...

Hope the pilot is okay. I heard his legs were pinned underneath the wreck and they had to pry him out.

It looks like a Wilga that was for sale on CS Enterprises site.

Also an Archer went through the fence a couple of days earlier. Sounds like he was coming in a bit too fast and couldn't stop in time.

Lots of mishaps recently. I guess it's the time of year for rusty pilots and rusty planes.

C-FLKA - Wilga with the original radial. Do the cowl flaps look closed (they fan in front of the cylinders)? Owner was Chris Cameron, avid pilot and legal counsel for Courtenay Airpark. Haven't heard if he was the pilot or not.

Yes, but they're all actuated with one lever so could possibly have been moved during the damage of the accident?

The news last night reported that he was. Airlifted to Victoria with non-life-threatening leg injuries.

It looks bad, but I look at it and see a lot of structure that absorbed the energy of the crash rather than transfer it to the pilot...

I believe there is a Wilga on floats(maybe only part of the time) near Vacouver. Is this the same one.

Different Wigas.

The Wilga on floats, is based year round out of Fort Langley. C-GELX, is also a PZL-104M Wilga 2000, with an IO-540. Not the best looking aircraft, but very solid, and a decent performer on floats.
