May 20th marks the 50th anniversary of the de Havilland Twin Otter’s first flight in 1965. To honor this remarkable aircraft, and its Canadian heritage, Viking will be conducting a 50th Anniversary Celebration flying tour to communities in the Canadian north.
Commencing July 1st with a Twin Otter Series 400 flying display over Victoria as part of the city’s Canada Day festivities, the aircraft will then head north to visit several communities in Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and the Yukon. Residents in each community will be invited to leave their mark on the 100th Series 400 Twin Otter, signing the aircraft’s wing ribs and “Journey” log prior to production. The tour will also be an opportunity to share unique stories with residents who have been served by the Twin Otter over the past 50 years.
We would be happy for you to join us at one of the Celebration events below:
July 3rd: Cambridge Bay
July 4th: Resolute
July 6th: Pond Inlet & Gjoa Haven
July 10th to 12th: Yellowknife (Midnight Sun Fly In)
July 13th: Whitehorse
July 14th: Inuvik
July 15th: Tuktoyaktuk & Sachs Harbour
July 16th: Ford Good Hope
July 17th: Norman Wells
Viking also extends our gratitude to the many engineers, mechanics, and pilots who have contributed to the Twin Otter legacy over the last 50 years, bringing this legendary aircraft to the people in the farthest reaches of the world.
****GOT AN OTTER TALE?**** If any of you have experienced the historic Twin Otter into any of the destinations above on some great adventures, post them here AND PM me so we can get in touch! I am working on a project that is looking for great Twin Otter tales in or around the destinations above. Also, you don't have to be the person that did it, maybe you can just point me to the person that did. I've heard from folks telling me about a baby born in-flight, transporting lifesaving equipment, reuniting families, etc., etc., etc. Let me know what happened you've seen! Over 50 years there is sure to be some exciting Otter tales!
Cheers! *****************

"twotterjockey" 1500 Twin Otter hours (right seat) flying with at least a couple of the highest time Twin Otter pilots in the world...
Landed on a prepared strip on a frozen lake (on wheels)...the sun had been shining and instead of packed snow there was some slick ice coming through near the middle of the strip, possibly some soft ice at the end that we wanted to avoid....during the landing roll out the captain (also a very experienced water-twotter capt) used differential power to spin her around (...all whilst rolling/sliding down the strip) and we were taxing back towards the end of the strip before I realized what was happening...blew my mind.

I'm not a great story teller, but I've got hundreds of photos of the Twin Otter from all over the NWT and Nunavut.
