Re: Cameron Air Caravan - CYTZ
Having quite a few amphib hours, being in the salvage business for more than a week and running a maintenance shop that works on quite a few amphibs - AND also landing quite a few floatplanes on snow, ice, grass - AND - also being in the right seat of an amphib that landed on pavement with the wheels up - AND also rumored to have landed a straight floatplane on "wet/soft" grass with the outcome being mud in my eyelids - AND also being in the right seat of and amphib that landed in a field and violently flipped over after the fan quit (at which time I broke my back!) SOOOO - In my shy and reserved opinion - the guy from Cameron Air did a fabulous job - so the rest of you armchair ". Yeagers" should change your tone of voice - you will probably get a lot further by listening instead of talking!!
Re: Cameron Air Caravan - CYTZ
The dung seemed to hit the fan because it seemed like the prevailing consensus was "if you can't confirm the gear... land in the grass" as per the supplement. At that point, a discussion started re:troubleshooting.
It looked to me like the only armchairing going on was regarding the notion to troubleshoot the problem as opposed to just parking it if you can't confirm it, nothing to do with what kind of a job the pilot did in getting it down.
This should have been easy to diagnose in hindsight as there surely would have been hyd fluid all over the pilots feet, yes? It let go at the selector handle right? Is there a safety bulletin in circulation or was it just Cameron Air who got these substandard fittings? Now I am now curious what notifications have been sent to amphib operators to be on the lookout for faulty flare fittings. Who was the supplier?
BTW, who should everybody have been listening to in order to learn from this situation before it all kicked off ? It looks to me like the only reason anybody besides Cameron Air gave this a second thought is because someone stirred the pot and asked tough questions about what really happened, by the looks of it for the purpose of helping to educate some people who would never know how to troubleshoot an amphib problem.
