I was doing a local flight with a friend few days ago, and there is this guy on floats that cuts it right through the airport, right in our flight path at circuit altitude, without even speaking a word on radio in an MF area.

Just saying a little respect on regs and a bit of airmanship helps for safety.

Terrible news, my condolences to the families involved. It's a busy place and I've had my fair share of close calls around CYMM. I had a feeling something like this was going to happen there at some point. Very sad.

How sad and unfortunate. That entire area around YMM and the oil sands needs to be turned into a TCA. I recently had an RA descending through 10,000 feet with an aircraft that literally came out of nowhere as though they just turned on their transponder. We were making our traffic calls, this other airplane was not talking to anybody.

I've only found out today that the student pilot killed in the accident was my next-door neighbour.

I did not recognize his name, as I've always know him simply as MJ. I also didn't clue in when I read his parents were holding out hope of his survival because he knew how to jump from airplanes.

A former paratrooper with the Canadian Armed Forces, he was also a mechanic in Fort McMurray. His goal was to make his stake, and then return to Toronto to teach automotive shop in the High Schools.

That dream will never be realized. Many have been deprived the opportunity to learn from him.

I'm going to miss him. I think I'll have a beer tonight, and say Goodbye...
