Housing around YYZ.

Post by ant_321 »

Hey guys. I just excepted a job out of yyz and I am looking for advice on areas to look at and where to avoid. I'm a small town guy and am not really familiar with the area. Looking to rent an apartment within reasonable driving distance from yyz for me and my wife. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's 2013 but I grew up in Toronto and would agree on this websites "Heat Map"

You either have to put up with a nasty drive or live somewhere close and expensive. (Brampton or Rexdale have lots of apartments that are cheaper but you might not like your neighbours.) Burlington and Milton are nicer but more pricey. Guelph is really nice but the 401 is a real b!thch with an endless convoy of trucks clogging the right 2 lanes.

On an average day the drive from guelph is 45 mins an hour if there is traffic. Prices are far more reasonable then loving close to yyz and when it gets really bad those few days the 407 can help out

Inverted2, you mentioned Burlington as a possibility. Are there many out there who commute from Hamilton? What's the housing market and commute like from there?

I live in the south end of Kitchener 1km from the 401. Off peak hours takes 45mins and peak hours is usually about 1h20m. On rare occasions it has taken me 2+hours but with a little planning and a couple of views of 401traffic.com, I have never checked in late. However, if there is an accident, particularly between Guelph Line and Milton where there are no exits for 15kms, blocking the lanes it can be a real sh$T show as all the side roads etc will be jammed. A 3 bedroom townhouse will go for $1200-1400. Get a rookie or 2 and that could make rent pretty cheap for a decent place.

I'd recommend not even driving to YYZ.

Depending on what your schedule is like, i.e reserve call out time, single day or multi day pairings, I would recommend public transit. As a local I know the transit system in Toronto is far from world class but renting an apartment in the north end of the city closer to the highways can make for shorter commutes. Finch or Shepperd &Yonge make for about 45 minute commute via TTC/VIVA/Go bus and all work on Presto cards. Saves the hassle of driving and leaves you free to enjoy the paper or that new AFM. Rent will be more inside the 416 limits though but gives you closer transit access to Toronto events. Lots of restaurants and what not in that area as well. Driving from that area is not long either, 25 mins give or take, depending on traffic obviously. But taking transit could leave your wife the car saving on costs. Just my 2 cents.

If you want cheaper housing, smaller town feel go west, Milton, Kitchener, Guelph, all great places but get ready to enjoy the 401 with thousands of others all riding solo...

Or If you've just been hired with a big pay check go downtown! Use that shinny new UPX service! ( just kidding, don't do that )
