Where to study for AME

Post by Denis17 »

Hi,
I am a french citizen currently living in south america.
I always loved mechanic, recently I participated actively in the assembly of a Zenith CH750 STOL. Curently I fly and maintain that airplane.
Next year I plan to start my career as an AME in Canada.
I whould prefer to study neer Waterloo. At the moment I am lookig at Fanshawe college in London or Mohawk college in Hamilton.
Is one more recomended than the other?
Has anyone studied in those colleges?
Do they have good international reputation?
In the future I plane to be a bush pilot & AME and I have no plans to work for a big airline.

Any information or tips whould be most apreciated

Denis

Ok, while I don't think there will be much of an issue studying in Canada you may want to look into our immigration laws before you start down the path of wanting to work here. http://www.cic.gc.ca/francais/index.asp

Canada is a great place to live and work but make sure you understand what the requirements are to work here as a non-resident.

As for the colleges you mentioned I cannot provide you with any opinions on those, sorry. What I will say is to look at this link: https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/ ... ic-529.htm and look at the "credit" part. This means you can use your time in college as part of your total experience time required to get your AME licence.

For example:

Fanshawe: 18 months

Mohawk: 12 months

Some of the differences between the two schools are as follows:

Fanshawe College (London Ontario)
http://www.fanshawec.ca/programs-course ... technology
  • AME - M, 18 months accreditation for Canadian AME - M license
    AME - S, 10 months accreditation for Canadian AME - S license
    • - Fanshawe uses the Sault College program
      - One year program
    AME - E, 18 months accreditation for Canadian AME - E license
Mohawk College (Hamilton Ontario)
http://www.mohawkcollege.ca/engineering ... grams.html
  • AME - M, 18 months accreditation for Canadian AME - M License
    AME - S, 12 months accreditation for Canadian AME - S License
    • - Two year program (includes: NDT, Welding, Painting, and machine shop)
      - Fist year common with AME - M program (for both M & S certification requires an additional year)

The contact information for each school is available on their web sites.

All schools in Canada meets Transports Canada's Curriculum, as stated in CARs 566 (http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/r ... 66-259.htm). The regulations ensure all schools provide the same learning material - however, each school will present the material in a manner that fits their needs and environment. When choosing a school there are schools in major cities and other schools in smaller communities - all providing the same learning material. Each school based on their size, location, years providing training, etc. etc. have their own idiosyncrasies.

Troubleshot provided you the best link to locate all the Transport Canada Approved Training Organizations (ATOs) for Basic Training in Canada. Google each school and program to determine what is best for you.

Both of these aviation programs are quite new. Mohawk has offered the program for about 5 or6 years, Fanshawe for about 3 or 4. There can't be many graduates from them that have achieved AME status yet. Being so new, neither one of them has really earned a reputation one way or the other in Canada, never mind internationally. I'm sure that regardless what (Canadian) school you ultimately choose, you will receive a quality education. Just be prepared to honor the cliché of "You will only get out it as much as you put in."

Dear Dennis:

You may even want to consider this below,

http://www.icslearn.ca/aircraft/

ICS may not give you the best college experience (because they do not even have a campus and can hardly call a school. it is all self learning online and you will not get -- i think -- 18 months less of work experience).

But if you have already worked on aircraft, ICS should work for you. Think about it.
You wouldn't care about that 18 months anyway because school will take you actual 2 years back to back.

ICS is a choice for you if you are already in the industry.
