Flight Dispatcher

Post by sohanhakuoh »

Hi,
The thing is I want to become a flight dispatcher, and most of the job advertisements I see require experience. How do I get this experience if I want to apply for a flight dispatcher job?

I am well aware that I need to take the TC exams, complete On the job training [that would take 2-6 months] but after that, how do I apply for a flight dispatcher job? :|

To be a Flight Dispatcher, you have to give your TC exams. Once you clear both the exams, apply for Dispatch positions with Airlines. Who knows....when lady luck shines on you. Some airlines hire Dispatchers with nil experience. Try airlines like Georgian,Porter or Sunwing or companies like Sky plan, Navtech. If not....join some Airline as a crew scheduler or Load agent and wait for any internal postings. Remember...your TC exams are valid for two years.
Once a airline hires you as a Dispatcher, you are given all the initial trainings and OJT in house till you are ready for the competency check. After you clear the competency check....you become a certified Dispatcher.
Good Luck.

Great answer by sohanhakuoh

I started at Porter as a Gate Controller then Ops Coordinator but with the ultimate goal of ending up in dispatch.
Working within the OCC in other roles lets the bosses get an idea of how you work with people.
Pass the tests, show them you will work hard and let them know what your goal is.
Those airlines are all great places to get your start as a dispatcher

Cheers

Experience at smaller places that have flight followers or operate a Type B dispatch operation
looks good on a resume too. We have a lot of dispatchers at Jazz that have that type of background. Skyplan in YYC is a good place to start aswell (so I have heard). I do know at least 3 people who have come right out of school and gone to Skyplan. As mentioned, working in other departments within the company can get you preference over outside applicants.
