Current Info on SAMRA Written

Post by justwanttofly »

Hello,

I've been digging through past topics on the SAMRA written and wanted to see if anyone had any current (2015) intel on the exam. More specifically the question breakdown, types of questions, and study material (notes). I plan to write it in the next couple of weeks and have been mainly studying from Aero, FGU, ACW, AIM and the TC Study Ref Guide.

Any help or intel would be greatly appreciated.

Just do the aerocourse.

A bit of money but totally worth it. Did it over a weekend, and wrote both the next day. With scores in the 90s without prior study.

Thanks DrSpaceman - I am aiming to write the exam before the Aerocourse is in town again.

Wrote the SAMRA just over a month ago and here is what I can tell you. Having passed both exams without the Aerocourse seminar I can say that if you put in about a week of studying for each and look at the right material you will save yourself $600 by skipping the course. For the SAMRA I found the Aerocourse workbook really good. I'd say about 85% of the questions I got on my exam were in that book or very close to the book. I also studied the AIM and found that gave me a lot of answers too, also taught me a lot for practical use! I had the Sharper Edge book but found that somewhat useless, the only benefit in there was the sections that had some review info...the questions were not all that helpful in there. Use the TC ATPL test guide to your advantage too, you can know what to avoid studying and wasting time on just by looking at that. Save your time and don't worry about any calculation stuff...never did one on either test which was surprising to me. For the SAMRA know RNAV/GPS, HF radio/SELCAL, mountain wave stuff, jet stream, upper charts, GFA's. No more Loran C on exams, very little ADF, and some on VOR and DME. All in all fairly easy if you know the Aerocourse questions good. Hope that helps.

I was told by a friend who just did the Aerocourse like last week that they only covered about 50% of the questions on the tests. Both exams have had major overhauls recently. The Aerocourse instructor apparently said many guys were getting hammered pretty good in the last few months and to email him any new questions that were added and not covered in the course. Just an FYI.

Thanks for the info Contactapproved. I have been mainly going through the Study and Ref Guide which has been a process with the AIM, FGU, and Air Command. I am learning a lot and find it all pretty interesting for the most part. I have a copy of the Aerocourse and have been doing the practice questions for review.

That's too bad about the people getting hammered. If anyone would like to share some more recent info with me that would be great. In the mean time I will keep slugging away at the books and hopefully get the exams done sooner than later.

I find sticking to beer is always the safest. Makes for a good night with the boys, but if you're on the prowl I'd stick to things like shots and hard liquor, less bloating and lower standards. Good luck!

I Just did the recent YYC Aerocourse and disagree with that statement. Aerocourse was great and they covered a ton of the material. Id Say over 80% of the items on the Exam were directly covered by the seminar.

The instructor did mention that there is new material that TC is starting to throw into the exam, and covered some of it and gave us a list of other items to research based on the Guide.

The exams have had changes from what I understand, but that will be reduced mostely to Airlaw and Instruments/ Radio Aids and Planning.

Its my opinion that the Aerocourse was extremely invaluable.
