Forest Fire hell in CYQT

Post by AEROMONKEY »

Tis the season.....fire season is goin good here in yqt....2 Ontario CL415's...2 Quebec 415's , 2 Saskatchewan CL 215's...accompanying birddogs...numerous helicopters...including a Koala!! never seen one of these here...especially on fire duty...any info on who's it is?
Fuel was in extremely short suppy here we ran out a couple of times....things got stressful but Pauls hauling showed up just in time with more..... we'll have the same problem tomorrw apparently...with Geraldton Wawa and the surrounding area relying in YQT for Jet fuel....The Mnr also counts on us for their gas in armstrong and alot of other areas.....Canadian North arrived this aft with Alberta firefighters to help out ....on their B737....nothing like unloading 100lb packs in 38 degree weather.....
Busiest Fire season in Yqt in at least 10 years according to my boss....busiest i've seen in the 7 i've been here
AND NO END IN SIGHT!!

Heavy Skimmers? There are different classifications of Skimmers? If there is I would have to say that the HEAVY would be the MARS.

Have to agree with you on that one, it is the heaviest of them all! Of course a 415 at 48,000 gross isn't exactly a light twin....

Word has it that there will be 30 scoopers in the province within a couple of days. That will be a record for the province. The most prior to this was 23. We are now sitting in Sudbury in the pouring rain.

I heard something along the lines of 500 lightning strikes so far causing alot of these fires. Any truth to that ?

Damn nice pic. We live in such a beautiful counrty and some people don't even realize it.

LostinRotation there were over 38,000 strikes just in the eastern region the other night alone. Not sure of the number province wide but you could probably double that number and there has been many more since.

Things in Sudbury are slowing down the last couple of days as they have been averaging only 30 new fire starts a day.

I think the news agency wasn't quoting the actual number of lightning strikes, just the ones that were reported to have touched off fires.

Either way, enjoy the busy year and stay safe.

Prayer in Time of Danger
O God, Who knowest us to be set in the midst of such great perils, that,
by reason of the weakness of our nature, we cannot stand upright, grant
us such health of mind and body, that those evils which we suffer for our
sins we may overcome through Thine assistance. Through Christ our
Lord. Amen.
