Winter Flight Suit
I was looking at buying one of these thinsulate lined flight suits for the winter, does anyone have any experience with these? Im mostly worried that it will become uncomfortably warm once the plane warms up, but any reviews or comments are appreciated.

Re: Winter Flight Suit
Layer up. A single layer isn't the way to go, especially if you have to spend the night outside.
Wear long underwear, regular flight suit, winter pants with winter jacket, tuque, etc. Remove layers in the aircraft as you see fit. Keep them handy. Bring a bag with a bunch of very-cold climate clothes if you have space.

Carhartt insulated winter bib pants is what I used to carry around while winter flying...
Easy to put on and take off, weren't too hot in the plane but worked damn well in -30 degree weather. A lot cheaper to buy than the flight suit you linked to as well!!!
All the best,

This is the best advice. A whole bunch of thinner layers gives you maximum controllability over your temperature. Last thing you want to do is exert yourself and then sit there sweating because you can't cool off. Then your clothes will be damp and you will get cold later.
I guess you could keep the inside of your plane cold so you don't get too hot in there, but that's not too pleasant if you're going to spend a lot of time in it.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself

Haha I've used those exact overalls for the past couple years, they are the best and I recommend them to everyone. Nowadays I'm supposed to be wearing a flight suit though, and the one I have isn't quite warm enough even with longjohns.TeePeeCreeper wrote:Carhartt insulated winter bib pants is what I used to carry around while winter flying...

I have a regular flight suit from this company.. Its low quality. The fit and finish are not good, for the price. I wouldn't buy from them again. For doors off flights in -20 -30ish..... Nothing works. I have so many layers i can barely move. Electric snowmobile gear helps.
Re: Winter Flight Suit
When I worked in the arctic I used to wear good long underwear, t-shirt, hoodie and cover it all with a flight suit (basically coveralls with more pockets). I then wore an old ski jacket over top, Sorel's, snowmobile mittens, and a beaver fur hat. That kept me warm when working and I often removed the jacket when doing heavy work (fuel drums). I carried a really good down parka in a stuff sack beside me in case I ever went down. I don't ever remember putting it on though except to walk to town from the airport in -40.

Yup.
Plus having good boots and gloves makes a world of difference.

Did you fly an open cockpit aircraft up there?Bede wrote:When I worked in the arctic I used to wear good long underwear, t-shirt, hoodie and cover it all with a flight suit (basically coveralls with more pockets). Okay, I can't fly in a Snow Goose, or Sorels. They're in the back stuffed into a bag, along with all the typical warm goodies I'll ever need.
Now this is important.
Socks. SMARTWOOL! Nothing else will ever cover my delicate "dogs". Nothing! Worth every cent. Toss the work socks.
I wear really quality hiking boots all winter. I can't remember needing the Sorels in the back!
I don't care what else you wear, if your feet are cold, you're a sad puppy!

Wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then.
