Try pilotcareercentre.com - that should start you off in the right direction...
Theres also a thread around on Road trips - what to take, etc...
Good Luck.
ps. Do try and set your sights a little higher than working on the ramp.

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

North shore is right.
The pilot market situation is quite amazing right now.
And it is more than possible to go straight into a plane.
Now open your options don't limit to 703, have a look at 702 ops too such as surveys companies and skydive centers.
That's a great way to get into a plane and log pic rather soon in your career.
Word of advise, set your standards and stick to it if you choose that way .
All the best in your search!

I know that hiring usually occurs in the late winter or early spring. Would there be any point in doing a road trip at this time of year?

It is very possible to get a flying job out of flight school these days. There are a lot of 703 companies hurting for pilots here in Ontario. Take SkyCare for example, they hired 5 pilots in the last few weeks and not long ago they had more aircraft than pilots. Some were hired with 500 hours but others with less. I was fortunate enough to find a flying job out of flight school and I know others who have to.

If you're looking for a unskilled ramp position Id look at the same places you'd look for ditch digging and fast food worker jobs, Craig's list and indeed and the like, no need to bother with the aviation sites, those site are for pilot jobs not unskilled labor.
