Red Bull Air Racer Crash?

Post by clear_blue »

A Facebook group I'm in posted an article stating that Mike Mangold perished in his L39 shortly after departure. Cause of crash and other details unknown. Here's the link to the article

Can anyone confirm or refute the claims?

His Wikipedia page also concurs, but I haven't heard anything else.
If it's true, RIP. He was a very talented and accomplished aviator.

Another report I read earlier this morning quoted a witness as saying there was a "flame coming out of the engine, and then it rolled to one side and crashed."

I wonder if it could be a bird strike and flameout, just as they rotated for a high-performance climb? Could the speed deteriorate fast enough for it to stall/spin that quickly?

Regardless, a sad loss and condolences to anyone who knew the pilot or passenger or either family.

The pilot in question is unlikely to have stalled or spun if the controls were working.

I guess the engine blew for whatever reason, blade , bird etc and it perhaps took out controls/hydraulics .. not sure how the rudder/elevator controls are protected.

No ejection seats allowed unfortunately:(
