I'm just curious, has anyone out there taken an extension or a pass on a GS and asked for a different one? I'm curious if you can do that.

I'm pretty sure they will accomodate you, especially if it's a valid request.

Just remember seniority is everything.

Yes, I have. The timing would not have worked out for me due to a commitment I had made to my employer, I was called for the next ground school without any issues. So I guess as long as you have an understandable reason they will try their best to accommodate you.

1 of my friends' was in the pool and requested a
Different start date after she was already offered a GS,
but then they told her to reapply. I'm scared this will happen to

You can defer, easily to the next one based on a valid reason, beyond that, maybe a reapp would be required, again it's something to ask the recruiter or at the interview. If you get called, and need to delay, ask the recruiter and make sure you're on top of the next call list. Jazz, like most employers are very understanding of this and usually accommodate as some can't make due within the 2-3 week window from offer to gs. Your current employer should also be understanding of your desire to further your career.

I can't comment on your friend, perhaps there's more to the reason I would imagine. Like Canoehead mentioned seniority is everything, even during all the movement going on.

I've heard of people deferring based on the notice needed to leave their current employer. I highly doubt Jazz is going to say "oh you have to give notice so you don't leave your employer in a bind? Pls Reapply." It wasn't an issue. But as Canoehead said, seniority is everything. If you can make it work somehow, take the one they offer.

Yes, in my case it was before I accepted the GS offer. the recruiter was very understanding of my reason and my employer was very appreciative.

Seniority is everything in the airline I understand but in the grand scheme of things a few seniority spots won't have a huge impact on your career I don't think and keeping you word (hand shake) and being on good terms is very important for multiple reasons. Most importantly are 1) Your own respect . 2)- you will need that employer for a reference one day (Air Canada will still call your last 3 most recent employers). 3) You have to think about the future as this is a very volatile industry and a downturn is simply a matter of 'when' not 'if' so being on good terms with your bosses and friends in your previous years would be a good help if your job was cut.

I guess you can call me a bit old fashioned.

Not old fashioned at all, that's the way it should always be. In Aviation and every other type of job. People who burn bridges will find themselves wishing they hadn't one day in the future.

I do agree with your post regarding the "ethics" of it all. Just want to make a comment about the above; there are MANY pilots currently employed at Jazz who have proof that this comment is a naive one to have. A "few" spots have meant many years of being so close to a left seat for some.
You are aware of what happened between 2000 and 2005 at Jazz right?

Chances are it won't have a big impact, but it is possible.

Nothing happened which was the issue. If you were hired earlier you had a good position, hired later and you were on reserve for years!

I talked to a guy who sat right seat for ten years at Air BC to a guy who was one number above him.
Right now, unless something drastic happens, the movement should be fairly steady but if another 9/11 or worse happens, hope you have a good seat/number!

Toronto CRJ, Calgary CRJ, Vancouver Classic and Calgary Q400. I think. Someone told me a week ago, I think I got it right. Lots of Vancouver.

Multiple friends on the course. 10 YVR dh8 classic. a couple YYC RJ and the rest YYC Q400.

Most of our course, that got YVR, have bid off... so there should be some more spots here.

I wonder how long it will take for them to find permanent YVR pilots. From what I've heard a fair amount have bid off right away since the slots started coming up in the fall.

Lots of expansion plus flow to AC off the Q in YYC is opening up lots of movement of senior FO's in YVR to upgrade onto the Q400 in YYC
