It really makes you appreciate the standards to which those planes are built/engineered. Kudos to the engineers on this one !

So, was it an explosive device or a bad o2 generator?

Yowza. They say "shortly after takeoff", meaning before reaching cruise/full cabin pressurization? That would have helped limit the damage.

The plane I'm working on right now is engineered to survive an explosion that would destroy everything within two feet. Blow out panels run the length of the floor to prevent the floor from either collapsing or heaving, double redundant systems that run in different areas of the plane, etc. It's pretty amazing to be involved and see how many levels of failure can be withstood.

CNN reporting initial tests positive for explosive residue.
