Avatars...

Post by Yoyoma »

First of all, let me start by saying that I'm a big fan of Haza's various avatars  This post is not a complaint or a rant in any form, just a different take on things.

6 or 7 years ago, Avcanada became a sanctuary for me, a dictionary, a source of aviation knowledge, a newspaper as well as telephone, an e-mail service, a pager and a punching bag. I've grown accustomed to logging in many times a day, checking in on friends, on various news and tragedies.

For someone like me, most of my logging in is done from work; behind a desk, where people storm in and out of your office. I have nothing to hide so I leave Avcanada running on my screen if someone walks in.

Recently, with the increased, euh...how shall I put this...increased skin exposure in Avatars, it has become harder for me to leave it open and post as frequently as I would like to. I'm worried someone will barge in and see breast or @ss on my screen or god knows what.

When we post something indecent, we usually put Not Work Safe and guys like me can bypass. for now  . But with Avatars, they're there, in every thread, waiting around the corner to pop out for Girlfriends, Bosses and Co-workers to see.

Just my take on things, I don't think they should be banned, I just think moderation is the key. Also, Avatars in my opinion should represent the writer behind the user name. Mine is a Snowman I made. I tried to make it look like me but I'm not that talented!

Just my office view.

Good Points. It's too bad that we've gotten so politically correct in this world that the sight of bouncing boobs makes people uncomfortable. I would understand if it was something graphic and obscene.

Oh well what can ya do?

Hey Out of Control!!!

How do you feel about boobies?

Another issue that can appear with avatars is bandwidth.

When I'm at home I have the luxury of a DSL connection via wi-fi. However, I spend a lot of time travelling for work, and many of the places that I go leave me limited to dial-up. As much as I enjoyed the animation in Haz's previous breast-oriented avatars, they slowed things down so much that they became a frustration.

I don't expect the world to change their avatar habits in order to make life conventient for me - but it might be something to think about next time that we choose an avatar.

How could you have something against a guy that can build a nuclear warhead from a toothpick and a piece of lockwire?

I see many of you have similar problems with avatars at the Office.   Thanks for the Firefox tip, but at work, we're on IE6.

Anyway, let's get the bouncing going again, I'm all for it!

Cheers

Could there be a "display avatars" switch placed somewhere on the board?

Even better, a control panel toggle and a session manual override switch that would allow you to leave them on or off by default and change according to the situation you're in...
