Commuting at Porter?
Does Porter allow commuting? If so do many pilots commute/common places where they commute from?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Commuting at Porter?
"Porter Crews are responsible for meeting all of the requirements for duty, including the 2-hour reserve callout when applicable"
Long story short, you can live anywhere you want, but when you're on reserve, they will give you 2 hours to report when an assignment comes up.
Many YTZ pilots live within the GTA, some as far out as London, Kitchener, Guelph, Barrie, Lindsay, Peterborough, Trenton. As for YOW, some pilots are doing the drive in from Pembroke, Brockville, and Cornwall.
Pretty much anything within a 200 km radius (driving distance) that meets the call-out time, pending traffic, is acceptable.
Some pilots do commute further distances. I lived in Thunder Bay when I was based in Toronto. I would fly a day or two before my string of reserve, and had a "crash pad" near YTZ. That was also acceptable.

What Grey Wolf says is correct, but do keep in mind that there is no official commuting policy... i.e. if you don't make it in for work, you have to book off. At the beginning you can expect to be on a reserve block which gives you 10 days off a month, and depending on where you are seniority-wise, you can try to group those days together to get 4 or 5 days at a time. You'd really need (at least) a crash pad, though.
Re: Commuting at Porter?
Don't forget, they'll want to draft you on your days off, if you say no or book off they'll haul you in front of the CP and place a letter on your file So make sure you're close enough for that too.
Re: Commuting at Porter?
Drafting can only happen if you answer your phone while on a "grey" day off (above your 10 guaranteed) or if they assign it to you while on duty the day before. Your "guaranteed days off" are protected - in that case, you have the right to refuse a draft, with no penalty.

How nasty is it getting to Billy Bishop for those around the GTA? I always wondered if it was a nightmare for you folks at Porter.
Re: Commuting at Porter?
a little off topic but would about 1500 hours of time get me closer to a first officer position in the next year or two?
Re: Commuting at Porter?
Marakii,
Porter has established an Early Connection Program. Once a candidate has 1000TT they are invited to submit their resume with Porter.

A realistic number to shoot for is closer to 2500TT. Keeping in touch; by refreshing the resume every 6 months or so and attending open house sessions, may lead to an interview. Hiring periods normally occur in Jan/Feb, again in Apr/May, and sometimes later in the year Sept/Oct.
How you answer those questions, and how many positions are available at that time; will determine if you get an offer of employment. It also helps that have internal references speak for you.
Hope that helps

And it's the truth... Just providing info for the OP to take into account.

I hate to interrupt two grammar gorillas flinging crap at each other and the proud chimpanzee who learned to post memes on a web forum for the first time. I was asking about the commute around the GTA and if it was tough on the crews before the aviation zoo rolled into town.
Re: Commuting at Porter?
My original post wasn't in response to you Skadoo.
Was only pointing out that they'll draft you and if you're a commuter from another city that requires a flight in, it can work against you...
To answer your question - I would say the toughest part for GTA commuters may be lack of staff parking at YTZ... If you bid pairings at rush hour well that's your fault I guess...

Re: Commuting at Porter?
CL,
It was horrible. That is just my opinion.
On year 1 FO pay I was not willing to live across the street, and chose to stay roughly an hour outside of the downtown core.
It's not only the rush hour commutes. Good luck getting off the island at 8pm on a Saturday night and trying to inch your way past the Ampitheatre, while a concert is playing. Or while the CNE is on. Or for one of the hundred Gardiner/Lakeshore shut downs for marathons. The INDY.
It certainly made the commute tough and was one of the big reasons I left. Which is too bad because I enjoyed the job. If you can live downtown it's a great place to work.

Did he call me a chimpanzee? Normally it takes meeting me at least twice to irrefutably come to that conclusion....bravo sir!Blueontop wrote:CL-Skadoo! wrote:I hate to interrupt two grammar gorillas flinging crap at each other and the proud chimpanzee who learned to post memes on a web forum for the first time. This is literally the funniest thing I have ever read on Avcanada!!
Re: Commuting at Porter?
That's completely accurate. The first time we met I had my suspicions, but I thought you were just a ring tailed lemur of some sort punching above your weight. Thankfully, before I embarrassed myself by making an awkward Bonobo comment someone pulled me aside and informed me that you were, indeed a purebred movie chimp in the left seat of a jet. You just can't judge a book by its cover!cdnpilot77 wrote: Did he call me a chimpanzee? Normally it takes meeting me at least twice to irrefutably come to that conclusion....bravo sir!
