Distance from airport

Post by HiLo »

I am curious to see how far people live near their home airport, be it their base or the one they commute from. Especially those in the Greater Toronto A$$hole.

Method of transportation would be interesting as well.

CYEG-CYYZ = 2713km, the further I can get from a that shithole the happier I am. I always feel my BP rise when I'm on approach there

5 min by car, 15 by bike.

I don't think I could ever survive flying out of YYZ. Even driving to YYC to go on holidays bursts blood vessels.

The majority airline types live about a one hour drive from YYZ. Barrie is referred to as terminal 4. The main reason for about 80 km out of town is house prices and most Airlines want you within an hour drive if you are on reserve. Kitchener, Guelph Hamilton are also common.

Still many commute from Nfld to B.C. It may not be easy but it is common.

YYZ-ICN-YYZ 13,000 nms or 27 hours round trip. 1 hour drive to YYZ and I consider myself lucky compared to colleagues whose commute is much farther. It's all relative.

One and a half hours north of YUL with no traffic. But I also have family in YUL that I crash with during standbys and the night before early pairings.

The further you get from YYZ, the more reasonable housing values get. So the question is: cost of living vs travel time.

Picking a base that is driveable to YYZ if shit hits the fan is the best bet, because commuting by air is getting more and more expensive. YYZ recently introduced a new $25 tax fee to cover... something.. so commuting by air is getting more and more unaffordable.

Jesus, those fees. Are they charging an "air replenishment fee?"

I live at the South end of Kitchener and it depends on the day. It can be 40mins or it can be 3hrs to get to the north side of YYZ. I always try to give myself 2hrs to get to there unless I'm leaving between 2100-0500 then 1hr will almost always suffice. Getting there early and having a nap in the parking lot is way less stressful than the alternative.

Anyone commute from north of Barrie? I've been considering moving to the Midland area, the 400 does scare me with respect to it blocking up especially in cottage season...

6 mins drive to YVR with no red lights and crazy drivers around. Be lucky if I make it if the latter is present.

When it's bad, I use 27.

Live in an overpriced box in YVR. But its 50 meters from the canada line train station. Overpriced box worth it for the convenience.

1+10 from the YEE VOR. That includes a stop for coffee.
Several alternate routes if needed, but the 400 is a smooth drive for the most part.

Obviously driving it between 0600 & 0800 is bad, and yes southbound on Sunday's gets bad by 1400 during cottage months. But I'd rather drive the 400 than the 401 any day.
