Completing CPL on Multi and building 125 multi hours
Hello everyone! I currently have a TC PPL with night rating and 130 hrs TT. I was planning on going to the US and do my full cpl on multi with ATP, but with the US dollar going up its becoming less interesting. I have found that Langley flight school has a very competitive multi hour rate of 265 per hour. Are there any better-priced school for multi that you could suggest. my plan is to complete my CPL Multi/IFR and instructor on multi and gain 125 hours of multi time. All suggestions or comments are welcome!
Thank you
Thank you

I don't think you've looked into what an instructor rating is, if you think it's something you can get in a multi-engined aircraft. That, at least, you will have to do in a single.
DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.

Skyquest has some of the best prices I know of and Ron is a good guy and runs a good school
However I'm not sure if getting everything done on a multi is a good idea budget wise in comparison to the gain on a resume. Also good luck trying to get pic time at a school on a multi with less than 50 multi pic hours on type. I know doing the rest of your license on floats is a better option if you're thinking of that route at all or just trying to get a first job, but the multi thing is a huge gamble and not easy with insurance requirements these days.

Reason I was asking is that ATP in Daytona offers Multi CPL + FAA Multi Instructor all on multi its part of their 3 months fast track program.
I looked in to langley flight school its 265 and hour so 125hours would end up being roughly 35k + tax plus give or take another 10-15k for instructor and other school related expenses so would actually cost cheaper then ATP due to the exchange.
@AV8r7 : My current school allows PIC solo on multi with 25hours with an instructor. but the multi price is rather expensive at 340 an hour.
As for the benefits of the hours many companies will hire guys with 125hours multi straight copi on Kingairs here in Quebec. Have quite a few friends that took that path instead of going the instructor route.
I will check skyquest thanks for the tip!

I'd read the fine print on that US offer very carefully indeed. Also, by the time you travel down there, find somewhere to live, pay for meals, etc.., I wonder if you'll be that much further ahead?

I didn't realize Langley Flying School's Seneca rents for $265. That's a real bargain! I own my own Seneca and my per hour cost flying 150-200 hrs per year is not too far off. I have also rented from the $340/hr place so I know which one you are referring to.berkutmtl wrote:Reason I was asking is that ATP in Daytona offers Multi CPL + FAA Multi Instructor all on multi its part of their 3 months fast track program.

I have around 300 multi PIC hrs now - I guess I'd better get cranking on my commercial rating =)
Just kidding. Although in 10 yrs when I retire, I might just do that and keep busy ...
Re: Completing CPL on Multi and building 125 multi hours
its a tough choice. I know Langley flying school a bit and my advice is to really really read the fine print and be informed before going into anything there (As with anywhere)...multi engine hours often have weird fees and stipulations with it, keep a close watch on that. Multi pic time is ideal if you can get that, it for sure beats single engine pic time if the price is right. If you have done your research and believe this to be a good idea economically, I don't see why not. Heck it would put you above the average 200 hr multi Ifr pilot with 0mpic and 30 dual multi. Just make sure you know what the actual per hour cost is after tax and ground fees/fuel surcharges etc. My school added a standard .3 to air time to get the billed hours as opposed to just using flight time. Sometimes it works in your benefit sometimes not.
Re: Completing CPL on Multi and building 125 multi hours
That's a very good point. Adding in taxi time along with standard flight schools' 200-item multi-engine checklist which would for sure amount to at least 0.3 taxi time, all of a sudden you're back at $340/hr. That's part of how they can advertise such a low rate. But of course, if all you are interested in is strictly 125 hrs in your logbook (ie. hobbs time), then I suppose it really doesn't matter to you if some of that 125 hrs is on the ground. Fuel surcharge would be a different story although fuel prices are back down now so it might not be as big of a factor.Av8r7 wrote:its a tough choice. Re: Completing CPL on Multi and building 125 multi hours
AV8 and Tommy Thank you both for your advice! So far a have 3-4 Canadian schools that accept to give me about half of the 150hours in SPIC or PIC depending on my skill and the rest will go for dual IFR MUlti and CPL training. I have received a few very competitive total package type offers to. In my case getting those hours would save me a lot of time careers time wise, so to me that is a very important factor and the fact that I am not using any loans to pay makes it even more interesting. Worked hard for the past 10 years to save enough to be able to cut of few corners
.
Doest the machine I will be flying to Ie Seneca vs Aztec vs something else matter at the end of the day in the employer's eyes? Or do they only look TTM and TTMPIC?

A light piston twin is a light piston twin.....usually......
There is one option that imo would be of greater benefit and it would be to do your multi hours in a plane you can get a job on. (Not too many commercial Dutchess' and Seminoles flying around)
Best example I can think of.........A Navajo.
Usually hard to find schools with them and they can be expensive to train on but it is possible and with the amount of companies running Navajos...100 hours on type with a Navajo should get you places much quicker than the average pilot. The cheapest rental I found is in Victoria bc. There's a school there with a chieftain. This should set you a cut above the others and get you a right seat job as a ho driver easier.
Pm for details if you want

Re: Completing CPL on Multi and building 125 multi hours
100 multi pic with only 250 hours isn't going to do much resume wise IMHO.
You'd be better off making sure you get as much night pic as possible, a float rating, some tail wheel time, and an iatra before you spend that kind of, $$$. That said $265 is cheap for multi time.
I also second the HO time.

Ended up negotiating 150 total multi hours. As the situation is in Quebec right now, with 150 multi it is very easy to land a job at a charter on a king air
