tax deduction for training in my airplane

Post by surferjoe »

I'm getting mixed responses on this from different accountants.
I'm training in my own C172 for CPL. What can i deduct.
A percentage of fuel, maintenance, insurance, etc?
My accountant says i can only deduct the cost of dual instruction time and nothing for my airplane.
If i was renting through a school I'd be paying $175 an hour and be able to claim all of it.
Right now i can only claim the $80/hour that i pay my CFI.
Any tax accountants/aviators out there with an opinion on this?

Can't tell you about the airplane, but if the instructor is charging any tax, it's 100% refundable.

SurferJoe,

After going through this exercise with my accountant, I believe that your accountant is correct (sorry).

I classify this under "first world problems"

Your accountant is right. See paragraphs 2.39 and 2.38 below:

For GST the rules are different. You can see them below:
