Pickle Lake CYPL closures this summer
We are planning a cross-country across Canada this summer and one of the places we would like to stop for fuel is Pickle Lake. I heard that there is some construction going on there and there is going to be closures. I've noticed most weekends are closed and weekdays after 1900Z. I've also heard there is going to be some longer closures. Does anyone have the dates that they are planning to be closed so we can plan around it. I can't find the info online. We are doing the trip mid-July to mid-August and don't want to get caught out or to get stuck there for a week when the airport closes, though I'm sure it's very nice.

Check the NOTAMS the day before or day of. Adjust your routing as needed. Worst case scenario you can stop in Thunder Bay to top up then make it to Atikokan, Sioux Lookout, Dryden, Kenora or Red Lake in Northern Ontario. Lots of the Confed students do Tbay->Atikokan or Sioux or Dryden on one fill up. There really isn't much to see in Pickle anyways. You won't be missing much.

I beg to differ! I spent some of the best years of my life in Pickle -lazyeight wrote: There really isn't much to see in Pickle anyways. You won't be missing much.
and I was only there for about 10 months!
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

I think living there and passing through for gas might offer different experiences though?

Only place where it took some effort in staying out of trouble with the local youth. Beautiful place, nice airport as well but wouldn't go back if it can be avoided.
As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Avgas in CYPL is significantly more expensive than other airports in the same general area.

You haven't lived toll you've stayed in the Hooker suite in Pickle Lake!
People should not have to fear both the government and the criminal. It should be that the criminal fears both the people and the government.

The person you want to contact is Gordon Murray at the MTO. He is the one that sends out the emails about when and how long the runway will be closed.

Do the locals still fight in front of the liquor store in the morning before it opens? I didn't believe it until I saw it. That alone would be worth a stop.
