Hi. I'm a pilot who recently came back to flying, over 500 hours, multi (not current), night and IFR (not current). Try to fly once or twice a month, just local, circuits, short trips.
Since I did my re-certification (it had been more than 5 years), I've been renting at YTZ. It's close to me, but not all that welcoming, don't seem to want renters not on a program. I understand the economics, but it's not my fault I just want to rent.
Thinking about going to Buttonville to rent, looks online like they have a fleet of 6, 172M's at a reasonable rate. But wanted some opinions.
1. Do they welcome renters?
2. Will they be there for a few more years?
3. How is availability when you want to fly?
Thanks for all comments.
Is Buttonville a viable option for renting

Re: Is Buttonville a viable option for renting
Unfortunately Buttonville is slated for closure in 2017 (haven't seen an exact date in the media yet). I don't know how welcoming Toronto Airways is to renters but if Island Air isn't doing it for you then it still may be worthwhile to check it out. My guess is that TA would welcome any revenue generating activities. I'm not sure what the $10 insurance waiver charge is supposed to be but if you need to that add for coverage to each hour for the cost of a 172M, the charge is actually $170 per hour (not including tax).
Your best long-term bet is either Canadian Flyers at Markham or Brampton Flying Club or Spectrum Airways in Burlington. It's a long drive (about one hour more or less) for all three options but if you're only flying twice a month who cares (assuming you have wheels). Both BFC and Spectrum seem to have good reputations with recreational pilots.
My personal experience with BFC was good -- although that was quite a few years ago. As a club organization they still promote recreational flying as an important part of their mandate. Plus the club house is not a bad place to hang out and make connections.

I have no affiliation with these guys. Nor have a ver been in contact. I have heard the occasional guy speak about them. I believe they are out of Buttonville.

Although Buttonville is slated to close in the realitively near future, Toronto Airways are planned to move over to Oshawa. If that's not too far of a drive for you it might be worth checking out.
