Food prep / meals / snacks on the road
Always looking for new ideas and tips on what people like to bring with them when heading out for a few days of work.
I quite enjoy being in the kitchen at home so when I am gone for a few days at a time I miss the luxury of a full kitchen + stocked fridge.
Things I frequently pack:
-a few frozen tupperware meals
-boiled eggs
-salad
-cottage cheese / greek yogurt
-oatmeal
-nuts/dried fruit
-beef jerky
-cup of soup
-granola bars/protein bars
-apple sauce
-canned tuna / crackers
-apples/bananas
What do you find you always have on the road? Any good recipes that keep well after being out of a fridge and in a lunchpail for 8-12 hours a day?

I've recently become a big fan of Soylent shakes and bars - there was a bit of a health scare with some of their bars that got contaminated with some nasty bug, but I think that's taken care of now... they're not fancy, but give you all the basic nutrition you need on the go.

I don't think they've figured out what the problem is yet:rocks25 wrote:I've recently become a big fan of Soylent shakes and bars - there was a bit of a health scare with some of their bars that got contaminated with some nasty bug, but I think that's taken care of now... they're not fancy, but give you all the basic nutrition you need on the go.

Boiled eggs and canned tuna would get a fellow passenger killed and buried in a shallow grave on road trips. That stink just burns right into the seat cushions. Salad would get you kicked out under suspicion. Not that there's anything wrong with that. In fact any non-meat would have you walking.
It was always beef jerky, fast food and the biggest 711 drink you could buy.

Costco does a Kirkland brand canned chicken that doesn't taste canned (and doesn't stink like tuna). Toss that on a salad and you've got a solid meal that'll actually keep you full for a couple legs. Or if you're a couple days in and don't have any fresh veg left, I just open one up and throw some sriracha on it. I also make homemade protein bars from honey, oats, flax seeds, whey protein isolate, and dark chocolate chips. They'll keep in your bag for days, and waaay cheaper than Quest Bars.
It's tricky not falling into the fast food black-hole convenience wise, but I find I think better when I've had some real food.

Salt, sugar and preservatives are a huge problem in a lot of prepped concoctions-- soup noodles, jerky and other stuff. I am no health food nut but I am more cautious than I used to be (although I still enjoy my one-a-day chocolate bar). I only pack my own breakfast because I find most breakfasts unsatisfying and unpalatable. The cool thing is with my breakfast I don't feel a sugar low or hungry sometimes until mid-afternoon- it is slow burning energy. It is a simple one and one I eat at home or on the road:
1 cup of rolled oats (quick cooking will do, but I prefer the thicker ones- slower consumption)
handful of chopped walnuts
12 chopped almonds
a few raisins
3 chopped dates
tablespoon of flax seeds
tablespoon of chia seeds
I put these into ziplock bag and pack a small container of milk-- where I live I can by small sizes of long-life UHT milk which doesn't require refrigeration. I also love mixing this stuff with low-fat, plain yogurt. The raisins and dates provide sufficient sweetness for me. If I do have access to yogurt then sometimes I substitute steel-cut quick oats (1/3rd cup) for the 1 cup of rolled oats. I can put this in the coffee cups in hotels, or eat it out of the disposable cups and use the fresh milk from the airplane if breakfast is at altitude.
Also I think it is Sunripe has these fruit bars (no preservatives, no additives) which are tasty and satisfying and have a long shelf life. Picked up a box at Costco.
