Westjet to move to T1 in YYZ in May 2006?

Post by WJflyer »

This is the rumour and speculation that I am hearing so far. From what I can see, T1 at YYZ is excessively large, and even Air Canada will not be able to fill all the slots there. I've read that T1 when fully complete should be able to handle something like 40-45 million passengers per year, whereas the TOTAL traffic at YYZ is more around 30 million - and let's not forget that T3 is still active. Also, reading the Master Plan from the GTA hints at demolishing T3 in 2014, and further expanding new T1 to take over. I know T2 is about to be demolished already and is part of the reason why Westjet moved to T3 (that and due to Jetsgo's demise, there was a lot of space opened at the newer, and nicer T3).

I would be surprised if it happened that quick. As one of the main reasons for moving over was also the connecting flights from Cathay & Air Transat, but in this industry who knows what goes on day to day.

Me thinks the rent is a bit more at T1.
Hope the numbers work out. :?

The new extension of T1 will not be open until 2007. So your 2006 rumour doesn`t float. Also, most of the internatioal carriers currently using the infield terminal will move to T1. There may be room for Westjet, but not for a couple more years.

Cheers

Why such a hard-on for moving into T1? What happened to the low cost concept? My only beef with T3 is when the flight terminates at the "A" gates!

Maybe Clive doesn't want to be low cost anymore. Could be another Canadian Airlines in the making. A few years from now it will go T/UP and the government will force another merger with AC at which point the WJ pilots are awarded better seniority than the original AC guys but not as good as the original Canadian pilots. Oh man. I can't take this anymore. Sorry folks, just had a brief nightmare. I'm ok now. :drinkers:

Actually Tony, that one had some entertainment value. C'mon, admit it, late at night you've been wondering how you'd look wearing teal bars... haven't you?

Not sure where all the rumours are coming from about T1, but it was not our choice to move out of T3 in the first place...Jetsgo and Canjet were both increasing size and in order to accomodate our expanded service there were not enough gates in YYZ T3 to accomodate us and of course we all know what happed when WJ first tried to go to T1... Then T2 was available as a fix. Due to an agressive demolition plan and a lack of amenities we chose to go back to T3 and started working on the plan as soon as Jetsgo announced thier demise. There is no change in Rent contrary to many beliefs here...in fact T1 has the same rent. The GTAA has stated this before too. Until T1 gets customs and a bunch of swing and domestic gates accesed by both carriers that can accomodate transboarders, it ain't gonna happen anytime soon...I agree with the above post the only thing that really sucks in T3 is the "A" gates and it can be a little crowded early in the evening when the overseas stuff is leaving... Once the heavy stuff moves out it will be better yet.
