That's a deflector to make sure any birds in the way go directly into the only thing keeping the jet airborne.

Short field takeoff, no catapults on that carrier. Also as indicated above it's part of the bird strike countermeasures system (BSCMS)

Wow, just wow. Not too much drag from all those barn doors... Too bad that version isn't the one they were trying to sell us, although the maintenance costs might make the costs of running my boat seem reasonable...

We can only manage to keep about 2/3rds of our relatively simple (ok, two engines, twice the maintenance) fleet of F18s running at any time. Imagine waiting at the dealer's service shop to get the control system reflashed on warranty?

Is digesting birds a relatively large issue for military aircraft? More related to the birds flying around boats or...?

You'd be surprised at how much FOD it can swallow and still be functional. I think this might have to do with how vulnerable the jet is in that position and even a fluctuation of power could prove disastrous.

It works far better than the PM's military procurement process.

Nice landing!

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship
