Bearskin sans nose wheel

Post by Flying Low »

Congrats to the crew of the Metro in T-Bay. You did an excellent job of putting it down without the nose wheel! I'm told you even had the props stopped on the roll out before lowering the nose. Nicely done!

The AFM states that in the event of a nosewheel up landing that when the mains touch you pull the Stop & Feathers to reduce the risk of the props disintigrating when they strike the runway.
I've witnessed the result of a power-on gear up landing in a Metro, and the pilots were extremely lucky they weren't sliced to bits by the shrapnel that penetrated the cockpit.

Actually the blades will penetrate the fuselage about row 1 or 2 (props are way behind cockpit and forward momentum contributes) You must be thinking of a slow plane like a king air 100

PS U shouldn't need a AFM to tell U to turn the engines off before U put the nose down

You can take the kid from the city but you can't the city from the kid

A cargo Metro landed gearup inadvertantly in Ottawa in the late 90's and the prop on the #2 engine penetrated the fuselage. A large piece hit the fire extinguisher in the cabin and was flung forward passing between both pilot's heads before lodging itself between the top of the panel and the windshield right in front of the FO.

I actually saw the piece myself after the aircraft was towed into one of the local FBO's...total blind luck that neither crewmember was killed. Had there been anyone in the jumpseat (actually just a standard pax seat left in the cabin) they would have been either severely injured or killed as that is where the blade entered the fuselage.

bobcaygeon,

Thanks for your armchair hero input, but I'm pretty sure I'm talking about the same incident linecrew mentioned.
After ten thousand hours in a Metro I know where the props are located in relation to the cockpit, thanks for pointing that out, though.

I do apologize for incorrectly stating that the props penetrated the cockpit. They actually penetrated the fuselage within a couple feet adjacent to their location, exitted within the same area, including the cabin door, and pieces ricocheted into the cockpit.

Nice to condemn someone for referring to the AFM in an abnormal situation. Maybe the crew shouldn't have spent three hours in the air trying everything they, maintenance and others could think of to dislodge the nosewheel, including taking a peek at the AFM. Ever hear of CRM? What's it like being omniscient? (insert quote from Ricky here)

You can take the arsehole out of the bush, but he's still an arsehole.

Good job guys! From what I've seen and heard the tube is scary enough to land with all gears extended.

The first seat immediatly behind the right seat pilot, often used as a jump seat for cargo Metro's is refered to as the "hamburger" seat. THat turbo dildo in YOW was on a training flight. Scared the living shit out of the pilots. The trainee flunked, the trainer went on to a career with the same airline. Helps when you are family. Both were real good guys and the accident was just an oops.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

I've seen the video. It's not great, it's filmed from the Thunder hanger about 600' away. Bearskin mgmt has the video now.
