a few questions regarding the MNR.

1) what are time/other requirements for entry job(ie turb-beaver/twin otter)

2) what are the working conditions ie.
-pay, schedule, base(location) benefits

3) i know the amount of actual flying is low compared to most jobs but oh well. looking more for security now.

4)links etc.?

I really don't know much about requirements etc. to get an interview, but I do know that you have to know your Operational Health and Safety regulations inside and out if you do get an interview. Apparently even if you're the best pilot since Orville and Wilbur but you don't know the OHSA, you won't get anywhere. Hope this helps, and good luck!

I'm sure there's a good reason for being very familiar with OHSA, or maybe not since its the government...but why must you be so well versed in these? In my dealings with the ministry of labour, this applies more to management.

North of 50 I will try and answer a few of your questions. First you don't have to know the OHSA inside and out. On the interview there is probably a question that asks, as an employee what are your obligations under the OHSA.

1) what are time/other requirements for entry job(ie turb-beaver/twin otter)

There isn't any set amount of time for the Turbo Beavers or Twin Otters but they tend want at least 1500 to 2000 hours on floats but guys have been hired with less. Waterbombing experience and or Twin Otter time is an asset but guys have gone to the Twin Otters without any. A contract on a Turbo Beaver is entry level but again guys have been hired right to the left seat of a Twin Otter or right seat on a CL-415.

2) what are the working conditions ie.
-pay, schedule, base(location) benefits

The Pilots on the Beaver and Otters usually work a 10 on 4 off schedule. Bases for them are Dryden, Sudbury and Timmins. Full time Otter Pilots are making around $70 to $80k and contract about $50k for the summer. Beavers are probably $35 to $40k for the summer. There is also a full benefit package, sick leave as well as a great pension plan.

3) i know the amount of actual flying is low compared to most jobs but oh well. looking more for security now.

You are right the flying time is fairly low compared to the industry but it all depends on the fire season. Some years are quiet, while others are very busy.

4)links etc.?

The Chief Pilot is Jim Bennett in Sault Ste. Marie. The number is 705 779-2149. Give him a call. I don't think we are hiring anybody this spring but we do have a couple of guys retiring this spring and a few more within a year or two.

Hope this helps!!
