Just wanted to start a new thread about Junkers W34 aircraft that was mentioned in the RCAF History thread.

Maybe you can clear up a bit of confusion Moose 47,

Cf-AQW was written off on Aug 10, 1959 near Nelson BC.
CF-AQB, another Junkers W34 was withdrawn from use on the same date.

Both aircraft were owned by Skyway Air Service of Langley. Seems strange to me. Perhaps my reference material is incorrect.

A friend of mine who is still very active in aircraft restoration flew AQB when it was registered to Riverton Airways in the 1950's. Here is a photo of it at Hecla Island on Lake Winnipeg.

Here is the list of operators of CF-AQB.

February 19, 1931 - J. H. St. Martin, Longueuil, Quebec

October 29, 1942 - M Charbonneau – Montreal, Quebec

February 26, 1943 - Arthur Fecteau - Senneterre, Quebec (Fecteau Air Services)
Circa May, 1950, it was re-engined with the Pratt & Whitney Wasp engine which changed the designation to W-34f

May 6, 1952 - Riverton Airways Limited - Winnipeg, Manitoba

October 13, 1954 - Pacific Western Air Lines Limited – October 1954 to April 1959

April 21, 1959 Skyway Air Services Limited - Langley, British Columbia
NOTE: Both CF-AQB and CF-AQF were modified by Fairey Aviation in Victoria, B. C. as water bombers. This entailed the installation of a probe and internal tanks capable of holding 150 gallons.

*The Certificate of Registration was let to laps on the 8th of October, 1959 and the aircraft was subsequently withdrawn from use.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for that. But did you mean AQW instead of AQF as being modified for water bombing?
The photo of AQB in front of the buildings is probably at Riverton MB c1951.

Not sure how many Junkers flew in Canada.
Some of them and who they spent a bit of time flying for.


CF-ABK - Western Canada Airways then Canadian Airways.
CF-AMZ - flew with Canadian Airways. Parted out for CF-AQW
CF-AQB - Pacific Western Airlines.
CF-AQV - Canadian Airways. Accident near Gold Pines, Ontario in 1939
CF-AQW - Canadian Airways. Pacific Western Airlines. Accident in 1959.
CF-ARI - Canadian Airways. Accident Waterways, N.W.T. 1940
CF-ASI - Canadian Airways
CF-ASN - Canadian Airways, Canadian Pacific Airlines.

I think we got them all unless you want to include the Junkers F.13.

All of Canadian Pacific's Junkers W-33's and W-34's came from Canadian Airways.

CF-AMZ - Parted out as of the 11th of January, 1945
CF- AQW- Struck off on the 20th of October, 1947. Sold to Central B.C. Airlines at Ft. St. James B.C.
CF-ASN - Struck off on 4th of September, 1946. Sold to B. C. Central Airlines at Prince George B. C.
CF-ATF - Same as above.

File comment: Here is Junkers W34 CF-ASI after it's demise at Kagianagami Lake, Ont on Dec 3, 1932 in the Nipigon Lake country. I was doing research on Canadian Airways at he Provincial Archives in Winnipeg and came across a few photos of ASI.

In a posting on March 24 I wrote that Junkers CF-AQW was
involved in an accident in the Queen Charlotte Islands in 1940.

That was incorrect and I edited my posting.
AQW was involved in an accident in 1959 in B.C.

Two shots of CF-ARI through the ice at Goldfields SK (my home town). Photos taken by my dad late '30's. According to Rex Terpenning, she was salvaged and returned to service, and later came to grief at Waterways due to fuel system mismanagement.

I obtained from the Canadian Airways archives internal company correspondence regarding the accident with ARI. Happened on Jan 25, 1940. 2 passengers were killed. It makes for very interesting reading. There was discussion about the use of the gravity tank during climb, and the use of the wobble pump after the engine quit. 11 pages in all.

Regarding ASI that crashed near Lake Nipigon it is actually a Junkers W33 since it still had the Junkers L5 liquid cooled in-line engine. The 33 became a 34 when re-engined with a P&W Wasp.

Very interesting photo. The Junkers ATF has Canadian Pacific Airlines on the fuselage. The merger of about 10 airlines to form CPA occured in 1942. ATF was sold to Central BC Airways in 1946. So the photo was taken sometime between 1942-1946. More likely 1943-1945.

The Beech BQQ was registered to CPA from 1942-1946.
