Sorry Rockie, but your guess is not correct as you did not identify which pilot was the real drunk pilot. And your 6670 posts on AvCanada(most of which appear to be about Trump) do dwarf my 2181 posts.

I can't believe nobody has tried to claim that beer. It's the second guy, where can I collect my prize?

With that out of the way, I wonder if Mr. Stumbles McDropshit there was at the airport to ride in a cockpit or just doing a little employee travel. One is scarier than the other but they're both pretty stupid.

Oh.....it was the first video in my opinion.....therefore no beer. You don't actually think that the second video with the guy at security was real do you? Impossible. Sorry, nobody wins.

P.S. We did have an FA walk into the cockpit a few months back with a friendly gesture of offering us some chocolates from a nice box which she had purchased. It had wording in a foreign language. A closer read showed that.....they were alcohol filled ones.

What are you supposed to do after eating those accidentally. Then again, a layover in Amsterdam seems guaranteed to leave you with measurable THC in your system. Soon will be like that here once Justin changes the laws. And some actually call him a breath of fresh air.

At least he pulled it together for the pre-flight passenger address..
(link is audio recording only)

I read somewhere that a couple upper level executives resigned over the incident. Seems odd to me. Taking responsibility for company culture that allowed him to make it all the way to the cockpit without being stopped?
Supposedly he tested negative for alcohol and banned drugs. Any medical issues that could cause someone to appear as convincingly drunk as that?

Calgary Police say a Sunwing Airlines pilot has been charged after he was found unconscious and “severely impaired by alcohol” in the cockpit of a Cancun-bound plane.
Police say the pilot boarded the aircraft around 7 a.m. Saturday morning in Calgary for a flight to Mexico with stops in Regina and Winnipeg. Before the plane departed, members of the flight crew noticed that the pilot was “behaving oddly” before he passed out inside the cockpit, police said in a news release.
The pilot was eventually escorted out of the plane and taken into custody. He has been charged with having care and control of an aircraft while impaired and having care and control of an aircraft over .08 blood-alcohol content.

Police have not identified the pilot but said his name will be released once he has seen a Justice of the Peace.
Calgary Police are expected to hold a news conference at 1:30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. ET) for an update.
Police say 99 passengers and six crew members, including the pilot, were scheduled to make the trip.

Congratulations....You can get your free beer by dialing 1-800-sunwing and asking for a direct line to flight ops. Make sure to check-in for your flight first.

Zero tolerance for this type of crap. Revoke his pilots license, drivers license, and work visa. Period.

Depressingly I am more upset that the pilot was in Canada on a work visa, since I currently know several Canadian pilots that are out of work.

An example of the arguments you can expect from the defence in a case like this....

"Lawyer: Dismiss Operating While Intoxicated Charges

A motion filed on Friday is asking a judge to dismiss federal charges against Sean Michael Fitzgerald for “operating” a Talon Air Challenger 604 while intoxicated on August 25 at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, Michigan. His lawyer, Larry Willey, claims in the motion that Fitzgerald—whose blood alcohol content at the time was determined to be 0.343, more than eight times the FAA's legal limit—by definition did not “operate” the aircraft.

According to the motion, the aircraft’s engines were not started; no passengers were on board; the aircraft door was not closed; no clearance to move the aircraft was attempted or given, nor was the aircraft moved; and the captain and defendant were “never seated together in the cabin [sic].” Thus, Willey argued, “The undisputed facts demonstrate that [Fitzgerald] did not operate the aircraft on August 25.’’

However, Fitzgerald was arrested while wearing headphones and seated in the cockpit with the auxiliary power on, according to the motion. The arresting officer, Sergeant Drzewiecki of the Traverse City Police Department, wrote in a police report that Fitzgerald appeared “to be making pre-flight checks of gauges.” Further, the motion says, Fitzgerald “had spoken to the tower for the routing information and the tape of the conversation shows that defendant had difficulty following/repeating the information.”

The federal charge accuses Fitzgerald, who was fired from Talon Air after the incident, of operating a common carrier while under the influence of alcohol, which carries a prison sentence of up to 15 years. A pretrial conference is scheduled for December 22, with the trial set to begin on January 9."

What I'd like to know is how he even got past security........ I know there is a deference to the 4 bars over there, but at the very least you would think security would tell him to call in sick, or they'll call ops/police, etc.......

The same question might be asked for the Sunwing pilot. Sounds like something from a comedy skit. Read this article......

"Sunwing pilot drank 'incredible amount of alcohol' before boarding plane, court hears during guilty plea

With an empty 26-ounce bottle of vodka back in his hotel room, Sunwing pilot Miroslav Gronych was so drunk when he stumbled onto the airplane he was supposed to fly from Calgary to Regina that his wing pin was on upside down and he appeared to pass out in the captain's chair.

Gronych, 37, a foreign national from Slovakia in Canada on a work visa, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to having care and control of an aircraft with a blood alcohol level over .08. He was arrested and charged on Dec. 31, 2016. That morning, Gronych flew into the Calgary airport at 12:48 a.m. He was scheduled to report back at 6 a.m. for a 7 a.m. flight scheduled to make stops in Regina and Winnipeg before continuing to Cancun, Mexico, with 99 passengers and six flight crew on board.

"This was a crime of dramatic proportion," said prosecutor Rose Greenwood. "The last thing the public should have to do is question the sobriety of the pilots."

The details of Gronych's crime come from an agreed statement of facts read in court on Tuesday. About an hour after he was supposed to report in, Gronych's second-in-command — the first officer — called Sunwing's Operations Control Centre (OCC). The OCC tracked down the missing pilot, who told them he'd gotten lost after going through security and couldn't find the gate.

Gronych staggered onto the airplane about 7:05 a.m. Airport and airline employees he'd passed along the way had already tracked down the first officer to voice their concerns after noting the pilot was slurring his words and couldn't walk in a straight line.  On the plane, Gronych took about 30 seconds to hang up his jacket.

The first officer took Gronych to the bridge and told him he seemed impaired and had to get off the plane.  "He seemed very nonchalant and said 'OK, if that's what you feel,'" said the first officer.

While Gronych's second-in-command was contacting the OCC with an update, the drunk pilot returned to the cockpit and  appeared to pass out with his face against the window. When he woke up, co-workers told him to leave on his own or be forcibly removed by police.  Gronych walked off the airplane, and gate agents held him at the end of the bridge until police arrived.

Passengers were told the pilot had suddenly fallen ill, but many had seen him stumble in and believed he was drunk.  Police noted Gronych had slurred speech, a tired look and glassy and pink eyes. He smelled of alcohol, and his pilot wing pin was fastened upside down.

As police escorted Gronych through the airport, they noticed he wasn't able to walk in a straight line, and he staggered when standing.  A replacement captain was found, and the plane left at 8:30 a.m. In his Delta Airport Hotel room, a maid found an empty 26-ounce bottle of vodka.

Crown prosecutor Rosalind Greenwood has asked provincial court Judge Anne Brown to sentence Gronych to a year in jail.  Gronych breached the trust of the airline, passengers and crew, she argued in her sentencing submissions. Though there was "ample opportunity" for Gronych to change his mind, the pilot consumed an "incredible amount of alcohol" instead of going to bed. "He had literally an awesome responsibility," said Greenwood.

The Crown wasn't able to find any Canadian cases of pilots charged and sentenced under the Criminal Code. In her research, Greenwood told the judge she was only able to find a U.S. example of pilots being intoxicated and charged. In that case, the captain was sentenced to five years in prison despite his blood alcohol being much less than Gronych's. Gronych's lawyer has yet to propose a sentence."

Passengers were told the pilot had suddenly fallen ill, WHEn will the airlines actually tell the truth to passengers and to hell with the fall-out !

Would this case drag through court for 2-3 years and MANY thousands of taxpayers $$$ if the criminal tried everything in his means to get away with it?

My experience with the law is as follows :

A police officer noticed that a piece of blue tape had been affixed to my Lic. plate "F" to turn it into an "E"
I was summoned to court on a certain date. I arrived to find my name not on the list for the court appearance and went to the registry office and the crown council to be told that it is moved to another section for review and might be thrown out.
I went flying for the summer and at that time, a summons for a court appearance was "likely" delivered to my winter address without success.
The next thing I know is I am being arrested, handcuffed and put in the cage of a police car in front of my wife and child in Golden BC when a cop pulled me over for going through a YELLOW light !
He would not tell me for 20 min WHY i was detained,,,then I looked at his computer and put it all together. He let me go with a promise to appear in court at a later date. I went to court., only to go in front of the judge and crown to set a date to appear in order to set a date for the court hearing !!!!!!
I went to the court house on the date and was told i did not need to be there in person,,, a phone call to set a date would be sufficient ( the judge didn't tell me that DUH ! )
I appeared at the set time for my defence ( I AM INNOCENT of the accusation! ) with new shoes and looking pretty, family in tow and pages in my defence,,,,only to be told , after my name is again not found on the court list, by crown council , that she tried to call me that morning ( I am out of town ) to say that there is a stay of proceedings on my case,,,,,I have no opportunity to defend myself and no way to get this thrown out. A stay is a hold for up to 1 year ( in case new evidence comes to light ? ) WHAT a JOKE our legal system is !!!

That is a pretty shockingly moronic statement. Clearly you have little knowledge of European customs, let alone knowledge of cultures beyond your own.

There are many European countries, in which people will wake up in the early morning and have a shot of the local delicacy for "health purposes". Mind you, that only tends to be the older generations these days.

I was thinking more that Sunwing scheduled him to return at 6 am after arriving at 1248 am. Are they ignoring minimum rest rules?
