Can Open - Worms Everywhere

Post by eatingKD »

Why doesen't everyone work for free.

As we all know its the low time pilots fault that pilots now work for free.
senior pilots in organizations had nothing to do with it. After all they couldn't do things like refuse to fly. besides that the guys coming out of school have only paid 35-50 thousand dollars for their education, its not right that they see time flying for free as just another year into their 50 tousand dollar investment.

Now senior pilots they only hve employors invest how much to get them type rated and PPC'd they would have no ground to stand on fighting for wages for the entire company low time guys and all. It's your decision.

My advice - Make flying a hobby and make your money some where else because I've invested my money and I'm not about to stand on the sidelines and watch my investment fly by while someone else works for free and I don't

This industry is unfortunately going towards this problem, so many guys buying their PPC's to get ahead, to then work for free (like that little company at YVR that bought NorthVan).
It is extremely discouraging for someone who needs to make a living and just doesn't get it all handed by mummy and daddy. It will become a rich-kids industry where interlect and work-attitude will take a back seat.

And the guy most qualified to sit in the seat can't afford to be there, that is going to back-fire, like last year that perticular company ran off the end of a runway in Victoria, in an Islander, come on, with all do respect of the complexity and speed of that a/c (not).
Isn't your selection process paying off???

What a coincidence KD. We are looking for a guy to work for nothing. Just give me your name and a telephone number where we can reach you.

Wow! Someone peed in your cornflakes, eh?

Deciding to 'work' for free is not the fault of anyone but the individual concerned. If you choose to justify poor choices by trying to blame others, look in the mirror to see where the problem lies.

What other options are there. Low time guy's have no barganing power in the industry. If I don't do it someone else will. And don't even try to tell me they won't

Like I said. It's up to high time guy's in the industry to do something because flying is becoming a hobby for me and every low time guy that I know. I'll make my money somewhere else.

what do you suggest they do?

let's say that you're a captain at westjet. you've been there several years, living quite comfortably, love the company and enjoy calgary. what is your plan? how are you going to put an end to sweatshops in aviation?

your frustration is understandable... but i don't think you've thought your suggestion through.

The only option that will stop it is to say no. Just like drugs!

Yes, someone else will do it. Others will commit violations on a regular basis too. For the same reasons; to get and keep a job. It is a small industry, be careful of the reputation you build.

I don't recall anyone making much money in this industry when starting out. Maybe your expectations are unrealistic.

Honestly, if you think this is particular to 'now', you are mistaken. When I was starting out (15 yrs ago give or take) the same things were happening. I refused to do it then and I would now.

It may seem the only way to get ahead is to compromise principles, but one will still get where one wants to be if you don't. It may be a harder road but worth ones self respect. IMHO

If you are concerned others are getting 'ahead', time has shown me that I am at approx the same career point as most all I started this crazy industry with.

Patience. It will get better. :)
