Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
It seems that Joe is faced with the same issues as other business owners. Likely wouldn't have made great TV (except perhaps the day he quit) but is still an interesting read. Also shows what pilots were paid at Buffalo in the 90's

That was interesting reading describing both sides of the situation in a balanced examination of the facts in evidence.
Looks like poor record keeping and lack of detail did the plaintiff no good in the action.

@CFR
The last link (NTSB) refers to a different Buffalo Airways.

Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find in this business

Ooops! Should have realized it as the A/C had "N" numbers. Link removed from original post.

all he touched was the throttle friction and did that for a reason ( right or wrong)
well i dont see it that way at all, the guy is a great pilot , he owns the damn airline and he wants things done correctly
with a good attitude you can learn a lot from experienced pilots like joe. id hardly describe Joe as a passenger in this case

This. Also, the timeline presented in the episode showed that Joe hadn't actually given up his license until after that flight.canwhitewolf wrote:**********************************************************************Human Factor wrote:Just because you're OK with your passengers reaching forward and adjusting your throttle friction knobs doesn't make it right.canwhitewolf wrote:

His comment for wanting to get out of Spence Bay for fear of running into a bunch of bald, red-headed kids was a riot!Geko wrote:

Will fix airplanes for food.

I suggested that was his reasons early in the episode to Mrs Canuck223.Human Factor wrote:His comment for wanting to get out of Spence Bay for fear of running into a bunch of bald, red-headed kids was a riot!Geko wrote:

When my friend worked in Pangnirtung for 6 months in the early 90's, it was an eye opening experience for him.
He and the other single guys were put up in a building owned by the local Anglican Church. They had literally dropped thier gear off in thier rooms when the knock came.
A group of local girls had come to call. It seems that in a town of 1200 first cousins, new meat is desirable. The girls pick-up line was subtle, and easy to misunderstand. There are so many ways to interpret, "Hey, wanna get laid?"
Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
Is there an alternate web site we can watch last nights episode on? It's not working on History.ca for me.
A device is yet to be invented that will measure my indifference to this remark.
Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
I didn't realize on the DC-3 that the ailerons we're controlled by the pitch trim wheel!
I guess I should write something here.
Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
lol I was wondering the same thing but with the age of those planes maybe things were put back together wrong at one point in time and they just called it an STC
Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
Seems to be working fine now, I just watched it if you wanna give it another try.Go Juice wrote:Is there an alternate web site we can watch last nights episode on? It's not working on History.ca for me.

Is it legal to have a non-qualified crew operating the aircraft while the training captain is in the back?
Or is this just a reality tv thing?

Can't anyone sit back and enjoy the show for what it is? Seeing those awesome old birds still flying around! The sound, smell and looks of the DC-3 should be enough to make anybody who loves aviation horny!
If ya don't enjoy watching the show by now the rest will be no better so quit being a retard and expecting something different and stop watching it!
Sorry to be so harsh on you Donald, but........ Come on man!!!
Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
After last nights show, my question is about the aluminum shavings in the oil from the damaged engine.
Anyone know if the cylinders are straight aluminum, or do they have a cast iron liner? I was wondering if the shavings were from the damaged bore, or scraped from the remaining cylinders as the oil pressure dropped.

I think they are round, not straight!
Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
I liked the part where they lied to the pax and told them they diverting to Watson because of the weather at Whitehorse rather than the real reason of a sick engine.
Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
Help. The like for episode 11 on history television website won't work!
Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
Nope. I had assumed that an engine designed and built in that era would be cast iron. When they said there were aluminum shavings in the filtered oil, I wondered if to save weight they actually used aluminum. I know in automotive applications, straight aluminum blocks have not been successful for obvious reasons, and cast iron liners are the norm. If that was the case, I could imagine the type of fracture shown in that cylinder due to heat stress.Hedley wrote:You're kidding, right?Anyone know if the cylinders are straight aluminum
From your reply, I assume that the cylinder is cast iron. So what aluminum parts are in that engine?
I know today forged aluminum connecting rods and piston exist in automotive applications, but I'm hard pressed to envision any of the high stress parts being anything but forged steel or cast iron.
Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
Well, unless the smoke and vibrations were obvious to the passengers, it was probably a wise decision. No use in creating a panic.FICU wrote:I liked the part where they lied to the pax and told them they diverting to Watson because of the weather at Whitehorse rather than the real reason of a sick engine.
Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
Er, no, that would be terribly heavy.I assume that the cylinder is cast iron
Piston aircraft engine cylinders - either radial or flat boxer - are always a steel cylinder onto which an aluminum head is threaded onto.
The aluminum piston goes up and down inside the steel cylinder. When you get (non-ferrous) shiny aluminum flakes in the oil, it is often from scuffing the piston skirt.
Are you pulling my p1sser, btw? My son knew this stuff before he was 10 yrs old, from hanging around with me, doing annuals. And I knew this stuff before I was 10 years old, from hanging around my father. And so on.
