If we start by following the rules, and everyone does it, things should work out, but as soon as someone throws a wrench into the mix, the rest of us must get creative, stray from the rules, and find ourselves in a unique and possibly dangerous situation.
C'mon Static, I have a hard time believing that. Am I to understand that if everyone followed 'the rules' like a bunch of religious robots nothing would ever happen? I invite you do spend some time flying floats or off-strip.
I will abide by regs and SOP's to help keep me safe. But I will not rely on them completely. I can only assume you're talking about Air 'Rules' in the above quote. As an example, 5 aircraft are joining the downwind for 23, but some ass wants to land on 05. Sure, he's not following the rules and 'throwing a wrench into the mix'. I see your point.
Don't get me wrong, rules and SOP's have their place. I know that for I too laughed in the devils face by flying single pilot IFR.
But after you've followed all the rules and done everything right, completed your checks, abided by the SOP's and something goes wrong...dude, ya just gotta look out for #1.
But the DC-10? What would you have done?
"oh...crap, there's nothing in the book about a fourth crew-member...you have control, I'll be in the back drinkin' Whiskey..."
...not a likely scenario.
Back on topic, yes those pilot's should have been fired.
