Damn, I hate to be the guy responsible for bringing this up again but.........
At the time I was searching for this video and just came across it today.

Please watch this video and tell me what the outcome might have been if United 1448 was a French speaking pilot and US Air 2998 was English only.........
US Air saved the day on this one

Downright scary

OK Petpad, take a deep breath fella, I don't care if you speak in tongues on the radio pal.

This is a problem that needs to be addressed; runway incursions are real issues. The only thing that saved these guys is the US air guys declining their takeoff clearance, cause they understood that the other guy was unsure of his position. That situational awareness is not provided where one party can't speak the language.

I'm not suggesting we banish Francias from the airwaves. If you've ever operated into some of the major US airports (KPVD is now included in this) you are required to keep your transponder on all the way to the gate for the ground control radar. Maybe we could make this equipment standard at major airports that offer ATC service in French. I don't have all the answers but I’m willing to help find them.

Cheers

No problem bud, I've been in this business for 35 years, worldwide too, and there will always be some language and comprehension issues, no matter where we fly. It's life and we have to deal with it, period. The more we do it, the more we learn and that's it, do your best when you find yourself in a sketchy situation, act and behave in the best way you can, and you'll make it home with your family all in one piece every night.

Well with this thread being bunped up, I'll chime in.

If I were to move to a different country where I planed to spend over 6 months (or for that matter get a job), I would damn well learn the local language before I moved there.

Now the MASS majority of Canada speaks ENGLISH, so should you (especially if you fly for air CANADA). I know some people feel special because of their French heritage, however save that for the bistro, it has no place in the cockpit.

I think that if you stick to the dotted lines when making the folds your might have some aviation success.

So what about Mexico... you going down there and make all the locals speak the Queen's English too?

Roger is aware that they speak multiple languages in ATC outside of Canada. He's in the industry. I think he mentioned somewhere else that once he's done with Mexico, he's going to abolish French spoken in France and Swiss airspace up to FL24. After that will be promoting common colour (white) with a touch of red below the ears and chin.
